The Appeal activity is intended to not only raise funds from outside of the movement, but to also raise awareness of the important role Surf Lifesaving plays in the community. Details of all Appeal Activity, key dates and information on how Clubs can get involved is outlined below. Please return the attached Participation Form as soon as possible, at latest Friday 6 October 2017, indicating those activities that your Club will be participating in this year. Key Dates & Activities Marketing & PR Activity October December Fundraising (Flag) Pins Available for sale year round, with a focus on sales over November- January Boardies Day Businesses & Schools are encouraged to pick a day in December to celebrate Boardies Day BeachSAFE Street Appeal Friday 1 st December BeachSAFE Door-Knock Appeal (Metro Perth) Saturday 2 nd December Sunday 3 rd December Marketing & PR Activity Period: October December 2017 SLSWA will conduct marketing activity through October December designed to raise awareness of the Appeal and associated activity, especially in the lead up to Boardies Day and the BeachSAFE Street Appeal. This will include direct marketing to stakeholders, and print & digital advertising. The Appeal will direct people to a micro-site - providing information about the Appeal, functionality to donate on-line, Boardies Day online registration, opt-in to sell merchandise etc. SLSWA will once again provide clubs with a range of digital resources including social media tiles etc. for Clubs to promote their participation, the Appeal and key activities, and leverage SLSWA s marketing activity. The Appeal is designed to Fundraising Merchandise Period: available now for sale In 2016, SLSWA produced a bulk quantity of fundraising Flag pins, which are available to clubs on consignment basis at cost price for fundraising during the appeal period and year around.

2 Clubs are able to sell pins at their own premises, have members take them to sell at their workplaces etc. Clubs are also encouraged to approach local businesses such as Cafes and restaurants, independent supermarkets, current sponsors & partners etc. to sell pins on their behalf. Where Clubs organise to collect donations from shopping centres on Street Appeal day (Friday 1 December) or any other day during the Appeal period, they can also discuss the option of selling pins with the respective shopping centres. Please see attached Participation Form for further detail on ordering pins. BeachSAFE Street Appeal Period: Friday 1 December 2017 The Street Appeal activity, where our volunteers head out and about in metropolitan and regional areas shaking tins for donations will be held on Friday 1 December. Please indicate on the Participation Form (attached) if your Club will be participating in the Street Appeal activity. Those Clubs will then be sent further information around the quantity of tins they require, collector stickers, site allocations etc. For Clubs wishing to collect at shopping centres, the local Bunnings etc. they will need to liaise direct with the management of those businesses. It is encouraged that regional clubs also speak with their local council to secure this date at soon as possible to enable them to leverage marketing activity carried out by SLSWA. Should this date not be suitable for some regional areas, please advise SLSWA of the date you will be doing your Street Appeal so as we can promote it through our various marketing channels. SLSWA has again sourced a number of volunteers who will be assisting in the Street Appeal activity. These volunteers will be kitted out in yellow SLSWA Volunteer t-shirts and will be collecting in the City for the Appeal. Please be advised that Surf Life Saving WA and the Clubs will not be the only charity collecting in the metro area on the day. The Department of Commerce permits up to three charities to collect on Fridays and this year, the Western Australian AIDS Council (Inc) will also be collecting on Friday 1 December. It is vital for Surf Life Saving WA to have a strong red and yellow presence in the CBD and surrounds on the Street Collection Day and we encourage all our volunteers to get out for an hour or two to shake a tin. BeachSAFE Door-Knock Appeal Period: Saturday 2 nd December Sunday 3 rd December In 2016, we encouraged our Clubs to undertake a Door-Knock Appeal on the weekend directly following the Street Appeal. As part of this, SLSWA ran advertising in the Community Newspapers local to the areas where Clubs would be undertaking the Door-Knock Appeal. While we have nominated the weekend of 2-3 December this year, we understand this may not suit some Clubs. As such, SLSWA are calling for expressions of interest from those Clubs looking to participate in this activity in 2017 should there be sufficient interest then SLSWA will support this activity through Appeal marketing. Please indicate on the Registration Form if your Club would be interested in this activity. Boardies Day Period: December 2017 Boardies Day made a comeback in WA last year and we want to make it even bigger in To ensure we make Boardies Day accessible to more schools and businesses, we will encourage participants to pick a day in December to hold Boardies Day at their school or workplace.

3 SLSWA will be targeting schools and organisations via a direct mail campaign, as well as print and digital advertising, to generate engagement. Parties can register to participate online at the BeachSAFE Appeal website or via forms sent out as part of the direct mail campaign. We will provide options for engagement should boardies not be suitable for certain businesses, such as wearing a piece of red or yellow clothing, or dressing in any beach attire such as a hat etc. or simply putting on a morning tea at their workplace for a gold coin donation. The idea is to engage audiences but let them choose an appropriate way in which they can participate. We would encourage Clubs to engage with their members to encourage member workplaces, schools, childcare centres etc. to get involved in the initiative. To assist we will provide you with a downloadable Poster/Flyer and Registration form which members can take to their schools, place of work etc. While these need to be returned to SLSWA to register, any participating school or organisation will be able to nominate either a specific Club or SLSWA to be the beneficiary of any funds raised. SLSWA will be also providing participating schools and businesses with a Boardies Day Handbook and online downloadable resources, which will include items to assist them in promoting Boardies Day at their school/workplace, class activities for childcare, schools etc. If you engage with a local business or school and they would like to participate in Boardies Day, please point them to the Boardies Day website this ensures we have their details to send them promotional materials for the day, details about where to bank their funds and we can also answer any questions they have about the initiative. *PLEASE NOTE; Monies in the BeachSAFE Equipment Fund are raised through the activity of SLSWA via the Appeal. The success of much of this activity also relies on assistance from Clubs and those Clubs who have participated in Appeal activity will be given priority when it comes to assessing applications for the BeachSAFE Equipment Fund.
