1 AK/ECON 3760 Instruction of Essay Prof. Y. Kong I. The Type of Essay: Students have the option of submitting a written essay which has a weight of 40% of their final grade. There are two types of essay. The first is a case analysis. Examples of recent cases which are worthy of economic analysis are: 1. Commissioner of Competition v. Air Canada (abuse of dominance) 2. Commissioner of Competition v. Canadian Waste Services Inc. (merger) 3. Commissioner of Competition v. Superior Propane Inc. (merger) 4. Director of Investigation and Research v. The D & B Companies of Canada (abuse of dominance) The second type of essay is summary and critical comments on the competition policy topic chosen by the student in consultation with the instructor. The Format of Essay and Case Study There are several sections have to be in the paper. 1. What are the key issues? 2. Simple model description (or case description). 3. What are main findings of the reference paper? 4. What are policy implications? 5. What are your critical comments of the papers? 6. List all references. Note: The final draft of paper has to be due on April 2 nd. 5
