Mike McCarthy Location Director & Dave Mazza Ron Flannery One Point Solutions Mark Rader Founding Members: Platinum Technology Keeping members up to date on changes in the DB2 Environment MDUG seminars usually feature topics for DB2 for z/os and DB2 for LUW. As many companies utilize DB2 on the Z/OS and Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms, members are encouraged to attend presentations that focus on both or either platform to expand their knowledge of DB2 across the OS spectrum as well as many features are common across the DB2 family. The upcoming all day seminar on September 13 th at the Crowne Plaza in Novi, MI features two outstanding speakers. The morning sessions will be presented by Mark Rader of IBM. Mark will be covering two sessions. The first session is about choosing the correct table space. The second session will be about using statistics and traces to determine key subsystem indicators that you should be using. In the afternoon there will be a presentation from one of very own MDUG board members, Mike McCarthy of IBM. He will present a topic about Big Data and what it means to a Database Professional. The last discussion of the day will be presented from the various members of the MDUG board. They will to discuss the status of MDUG, etc. It looks like it will be another good event of interesting DB2 technology topics. TO REGISTER: Send an to reservations@mdug.org with your name, your membership type (Corp, Vendor or Ind.), and if appropriate the number and name of additional attendees. GROUP SUPPORT: There is always a need for volunteers to support the ongoing activities of the Group. Each year MDUG need new volunteers as board members retire and move on. Without volunteers the group will be unable to continue operations. Please see News for Members on how you can volunteer. 3 Presentation #1: Eenie Meenie Miney Mo, With Which Table (Space) Type and Page Size Shall I Choose for DB2 on z/os? Abstract: Choosing the correct DB2 table (Space) type is very confusing. Should I go with a segmented table space, a UTS (if so, a PBG or PBR), HASH, or maybe good old classic partitioned? How about the page size? I now have a choice of 4K, 8K, 16K, or 32K for my table space and/or index. Should I choose a multi or single table option? Should I compress the object? Choosing the data's correct type and size the first time is essential to avoid costly outages. Come learn about best practices in choosing the correct types and settings for your data. Presentation #2: DB2 Subsystem Health: Performance and Availability Based on Statistics and Stories Abstract: Statistics reports and statistics traces can be used to analyze DB2 subsystem behavior and identify problems or risks for future problems. This session uses the OMPE Statistics Long report as a point of departure to discuss key subsystem indicators that you should be tracking. The statistics discussion leads to stories of real customer experiences, problems and solutions. Presentation #3: Big Data; Big Deal? What does it mean to a Database Professional? Abstract: Consultants, vendors, and IT news media are all talking about Big Data. What is it and should you as a database professional care? What is the intersection of Big Data with big databases? This session will cover the basics of Big Data, some of the technologies being used, and a few examples of how Big Data is being deployed. Big Data is potentially a source for large volumes of new data entering existing warehouses and systems. 3 September 2012

Group Support Volunteers are the heart of any non-profit group. This is especially true for MDUG. Without volunteers to handle the affairs of the group, the group wouldn t exist. Group membership fees only provide enough income to cover the costs for holding the seminars, and others things such as the web site and the PO Box, which are required for the group s operation. There isn t enough income to pay someone to find speakers, pay bills, coordinate activities, etc. As always MDUG needs more volunteers to keep operating. Volunteering is a good way to find out more about the group operations and expand your skills. If you can volunteer 6 September 2012

7 to support the group s activities next year, please let us know. Many of the support activities can be done from your home or desk and many do not take more then a few hours a month. Even MDUG Board meetings can be done from your desk, as all meetings are held via telecom and usually not more than once a month. And supporting the group allows you to attend the seminars at no cost. A few of the areas where you could help out are: supporting the web site, taking reservations, suggesting topics/speakers, management of the group s, group coordination, providing onsite support at the seminar, handling evaluations, and speaker introductions. We hope you will talk to one of the red ribbon wearers at the seminar about how you can volunteer or send an with your contact information to admin@mdug.org asking where you can help out or just that you want to discuss volunteering with someone on the board. We will get back to you. 7 September 2012
