3 USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA: PUPIL TOOLKIT Social Media is a very useful marketing tool, if used properly it can be a legitimate and safe way to support engagement, learning and progressions with your life goals and achievements. It can also be a great way to stay ahead of news and technology, find opportunities and improve social skills. Don t seek out school staff members, outside contractors or third parties associated with the school or the surrounding community. 2. Don t Comment or private message any staff member, outside contractors or third parties associated with the school on their page/profile or school social media account. 3. Do not Comment on any post. Remember, Like but don t Comment. 4. Don t encourage your friends and family to Comment on any media shared, this includes visual and text based media. They may Like posts, but any Comment will be deleted. 5. Don t mention the school in any of your posts or # 4

5 SOCIAL MEDIA - BASIC GUIDE 10 tips for your personal page 1 - Keep your passwords safe. Do not share them with anyone. 2 - Never leave yourself logged in to a computer or mobile device that is not your own. 3 - Share positive content. Make people smile 4 - Be safe. Don t connect or friend with people that you do not know. 5 - Report any threats, unusual, suspicious or offensive activity immedietly. 6 - Check your spelling and grammar before posting and avoid the use of foul language. 7 - Avoid conflict at all cost. In some cases conflict can lead to litigation and is now recognised by the police as a hate crime. 8 - Consider making your profile private. 9 - Follow interesting pages. Show interest in others Don t steal content. If you use or share other people s content, make sure you credit the source where you found it. 5

6 Staying Safe Whilst Using Social Media The Internet as a whole can be a dangerous place for young people. This is not to be taken lightly. There are numerous cases where young people have been groomed, bullied and shamed online. Here are a few tips for Internet safety: Only click on external links that are from reliable sources. Friends and family are not exempt. Be extra careful of fake accounts, fake accounts are often hackers phishing for personal details - report anything or anyone unusual. Block any user that spreads hate or negativity on your page. People visiting your page will judge you by the content you post - try and set a good example to others, first impressions are very important. Never accept any friend requests from people you do not know. Check them out first and be sure to see whom you have in common. Do not accept personal threats. West Yorkshire Police take all Internet based hate crimes very seriously. Take screen shots and contact the police. 6

7 Do not share your personal details e.g. phone number, address, snap chat etc. Pay extra attention to your privacy settings. Do not accept s, pictures, files or any other form of media from people you do not know. Delete their message instantly - messages can often contain negative material or a virus. Do not share indecent images of yourself or anyone else online. Images can be shared globally and used for profit and to shame. Respect yourself. Never meet up with anyone you have only talked to online. This can be extremely dangerous. Report, block and remove anyone who asks for an image of you, your friends, family, home or school. Follow wisely. Not all celebrities are positive role models - don t copy their casual attitude to social media. 7

Do not slander - Lies cause harm and can ruin credibility - don t make false accusations or damaging statements. Slandering is a criminal offence and you will be prosecuted. 9 Planning Ahead and Commercial Awareness Social media is also a useful tool that can help you build and track your career, follow your dreams and open the door to a world of positive opportunities. Social media is now a vital cog in the wheel of recruitment - it can be used to network, research and job search. Ever heard the saying what goes around comes around? Potential employers and your formal contacts will check your social media for legitimacy and competency. In short, what you post on social media could reflect badly on your character at a later date - always think, before you post. Everyone needs a plan, right? 9
