The work of prepring Interntionl Stndrds is normlly crried out through ISO technicl committees. Ech member body interested in subject for which technicl committee hs been estblished hs the right to be represented on tht committee. Interntionl orgniztions, governmentl nd non-governmentl, in liison with ISO, lso tke prt in the work. ISO collbortes closely with the Interntionl Electrotechnicl Commission (IEC) on ll mtters of electrotechnicl stndrdiztion. Interntionl Stndrds re drfted in ccordnce with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Prt 2. The min tsk of technicl committees is to prepre Interntionl Stndrds. Drft Interntionl Stndrds dopted by the technicl committees re circulted to the member bodies for voting. 5 Provläsningsexemplr / Preview ISO 6947:2011(E) Introduction This Interntionl Stndrd provides positions for stndrd discrete test piece orienttion PA, PB, H-L045, etc. tht hve been specified in this Interntionl Stndrd since the first edition (ISO 6947:1980). In this revision, positions re defined for production welding. These positions re flt, horizontl, verticl, nd overhed. Unlike testing positions, these positions re contiguous. The direction of welding is n essentil prmeter for determining the welding position, e.g. up or down. The welding position is not dependent on the geometricl rrngement of the joint, e.g. butt or fillet joint, or tht of the semi-finished product. Welds of ll types nd in ll directions re covered. The min positions hve been given symbols which cn esily be used for designtion purposes; these symbols were chosen independently of possible meningful bbrevitions, i.e. they re not derived from ny prticulr lnguge. The reltionship between testing positions nd production welding positions is specified elsewhere, e.g. in ISO 9606 [1] or ISO [2]. ISO 2011 All rights reserved v

Annex A gives exmples of the limits of the slope of weld xis nd the rottion of the weld fce bout the weld xis for welding positions in production welds. Annex B provides comprison of Interntionl, Europen nd US designtions. 2 Terms nd definitions For the purposes of this document, the following terms nd definitions pply. 2.1 welding position position of weld in spce, which is defined reltive to the slope of the xis nd rottion of the fce of the weld reltive to the horizontl plne 2.2 min welding position welding position, designted PA, PB, PC, PD, PE, PF or PG NOTE For PA, PB, PC, PD nd PE, see Figure slope S ngle of the xis of the weld reltive to the min welding position 2.4 rottion R ngle of the fce of the weld reltive to the min welding position 2.5 inclined ngle L ngle of the xis of the pipe 3 Welding positions 3.1 Min welding positions The min welding positions re illustrted in Figure 1 with exmples of their ppliction for butt nd fillet welds in Figure 2.
