2 150ACS Contents Introduction Features & Benefits Performance Benefits Anti- Settling & Pigment Suspension Suspension of Matting Pigment Metallic Pigment Alignment Sag Resistance Use Levels & Incorporation Typical Properties Applications Appendix Formulations 1-4 Introduction Troythix 150ACS is an additive that improves the rheological profile of non-aqueous systems. It is especially effective in the suspension and alignment of metallic, special effect and matting pigments. Troythix 150ACS is a pre-activated polyamide wax dispersion. Pre-activation allows the product to be used conveniently in the grind stage or as a post-blend additive. The rheological profile imparted by Troythix 150ACS promotes excellent sag & settling resistance combined with improved application properties. The unique nature of the additive allows these properties to be imparted to a formulation without adversely affecting other film properties, such as flow & leveling, gloss and clarity. F eatures & Benefits Troythix 150ACS is a highly effective low sheer rheology modifier that provides a coating with resistance to sag and pigment sedimentation in non-aqueous systems. It imparts high film build with minimal or no adverse affect on flow & leveling and gloss, and provides improved application properties. Troythix 150ACS provides excellent suspension and alignment of metallic, special effect and matting pigments. Excellent sag resistance Provides pigment suspension Enhanced coating appearance with metallic and effect pigments Improved application No adverse effects on film clarity and gloss Minimal effects on flow & leveling Easily incorporated pre-activated paste, including post-blend Non-seeding at elevated temperatures Good stability on aging Effective in a broad range of resins 2

3 Performance Benefits Excellent Anti-Settling & Pigment Suspension The unique nature of Troythix 150ACS increases low shear viscosity, resulting in a greater resistance to sagging and pigment settling. Exhibit 1 illustrates the increases in low shear viscosity at use levels of %. Pigment Dispersed in White Spirits Exhibit 2 Nitrocellulose Lacquer Coating (Formulation 1) Exhibit 1 1.0% 150ACS 1.0% 150ACS Low shear viscosity, which reflects storage conditions, defines the settling characteristics of coating systems. Higher viscosities at low shear rates improves pigment suspension. (Exhibit 2) Excellent Suspension of Matting Pigment The suspension of matting pigments, such as fumed silica, is difficult to achieve in formulating semi-gloss or matte finishes. The efficient suspension of the pigment is necessary to provide uniform gloss reduction and improved storage stability. Inefficient silica suspension causes pigment flocculation and hard settling which is extremely difficult to re-incorporate. A clear alkyd matte wood finish containing 1% Troythix 150ACS showed excellent silicia suspension after one month of heat aged storage (Exhibit 3). Clear Alkyd Matte Finish (Formulation 4) Exhibit 3 Optimized levels of Troythix 150ACS allow easy reincorporation of the matting pigment, resulting in efficient, uniform matting after storage. The coating without Troythix 150ACS shows hard settling and flocculation, which means loss of matting and higher gloss. 1.0% 150ACS 3

4 Superior Metallic Pigment Alignment Metallic pigments are widely used in a variety of OEM, automotive and general industrial applications. An optimized rheology profile establishes metallic pigment suspension for improved storage stability and superior appearance properties. Application studies with leafing and non-leafing aluminum pastes showed superior appearance properties when Troythix 150ACS was incorporated in the systems. (Exhibits 4 & 5) Leafing Aluminum Pigment Paste: Incorporation of Troythix 150ACS improves the pigment uniformity and alignment necessary for better film appearance. As illustrated in Exhibit 4, the improved pigment leafing provided brightness and eliminated light reflection discontinuities appearing as dark and bright spots. Acrylic Leafing Aluminum Coating Exhibit 4 Alignment of Pearlescent Pigments: Troythix 150ACS provides similar performance advantages with effects pigments such as pearlescent pigments. 1.0% Use Level Non-leafing Aluminum Pigment Paste: Incorporation of Troythix 150ACS provides the proper metallic pigment alignment and discreet particle separation necessary for uniform brightness and enhanced special effects. Acrylic Non-Leafing Aluminum Coating (Formulation 3) Exhibit 5 1.0% Use Level Excellent Sag Resistance: Heavy duty industrial and maintenance coatings are often applied in thick films for maximum substrate protection. Troythix 150ACS is successfully used in these coatings to provide improved sag resistance and edge retention. It develops low shear viscosity in these coatings, thereby preventing sagging of thick films on vertical surfaces. Industrial Gloss Coating (Formulation 2) Exhibit 7 Industrial Gloss Coating (Formulation 2) Exhibit 6 These improvements are achieved with no effect on coating properties such as surface smoothness and gloss. Exhibit 6 illustrates 20 and 60 degree gloss readings at use levels between %. Exhibit 7 illustrates the improvement of sag resistance Troythix 150ACS provides in an industrial gloss coating (Formulation 1) without affecting the gloss of the coating. 4

5 Use Levels & Incorporation The following use levels are suggested for Troythix 150ACS, based on total formulation weight. More or less may be required, depending on a specific system. Suggested Use Levels Pigment Suspension % Sag Resistance % Troythix 150ACS may be added in either the dispersion or let-down stage of coating manufacture. High speed mixing is essential in order to disperse the wax agglomerates to a small particle size for optimum performance. Dispersion Stage: The pigment dispersion (grind) stage of a pigmented coating is the preferred place for incorporation. The high shear forces necessary to disperse pigment agglomerates will also disperse the wax particles to the small size necessary for optimum rheology benefit and maintenance of gloss. How it Works: Troythix 150ACS is an amide wax that is pre-activated. When added to a coating, the active crystalline fibers interact to form a 3 dimensional network. Sag & Settling Resistance: During storage the active fibers distribute randomly providing an increased low shear viscosity. This increased low shear viscosity promotes resistance to sagging and provides improved pigment suspension coupled with excellent flow & leveling and gloss. Manufacturing & Application: During manufacture or application the fibers align in a parallel structure which results in low or no increase in Medium/High Shear viscosity. This promotes ease in production and improved application properties Suggested Procedure: 1. Perform grind stage as usual until pigment dispersion is complete. 2. Add Troythix 150ACS. 3. Continue dispersing for five minutes. For Use in Let Down or as a Post Add: It is preferred to prepare a dispersion of Troythix 150ACS in a solvent or the coating. Best results are obtained using a mixture of 1 part Troythix 150ACS and 1 part solvent (or coating). 1. Place solvent or coating in a mixer providing high shear. 2. Begin stirring at a slow speed. 3. Add Troythix 150ACS. Typical Properties Typical properties of Troythix 150ACS are listed. These properties are intended to provide general guidance, and are not purchase specifications.
