4 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Manganese is the fourth most widely used metal in the world after iron ore, aluminum and copper. The major area of application for manganese is the steel industry, accounting for 95% of the manganese ore produced. Global manganese reserves measured 570 million tonnes (Mt) as of January 2015, with South Africa accounting for 150Mt, followed by Ukraine (140Mt), Australia (97Mt), Brazil (54Mt), India (52Mt), China (44Mt) and Gabon (24Mt). As the global economic recovery strengthened in 2014, the production of crude steel grew by 1.2% to reach 1.66 billion tonnes in This led to an increase in global production of manganese ore, which increased from 50.7Mt in 2012 to an estimated XXMt in In 2013, China was the largest producer of manganese ore at 23Mt, followed by South Africa (11.02Mt), Australia (7.26Mt), Gabon (4.3Mt), Brazil (2.44Mt) and India (2.05Mt). Of the rest, Ghana accounted for 1.91Mt and Ukraine 1.35Mt. The construction industry, which is a key end use market for steel, is anticipated to grow at an average annual rate of X% from US$7.4 trillion in 2010 to US$XX trillion in 2015 before increasing by an average annual growth rate of XX% over the forecast period ( ) to US$XX trillion in The growth in these end-use industries steel and construction, coupled with investments in port development in South Africa, exploration projects in Australia and the South African commitment to XX its manganese ore production to XXMt over the forecast period, global manganese ore production over the forecast period is estimated to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of XX% to XXMt in In 2013, South Africa was the world s largest exporter of manganese ores and concentrates with 9.9Mt (US$1.5 million) and China was the largest importer with 16.5Mt (US$3.1 million). Australia was the second largest exporter (7.1Mt), followed by Gabon (3.3Mt), Brazil (1.8Mt), Kazakhstan (0.7Mt) and Myanmar while India (1.9Mt), South Korea (1.4Mt) and Russia (1.1Mt) were the other major importers following China.
