6 General Information A Thermistor is an electronic component that exhibits a large change in resistance with a change in its body temperature. The word Thermistor is actually a contraction of the words Thermal Resistor. The Thermistors that we describe are ceramic semiconductors and have either a large positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTC devices) or large negative temperature coefficient of resistance (NTC devices). Changes in the body temperature of Thermistors can be brought about (a) Externally by a change in the temperature of its surrounding (ambient temperature) and corresponding change in the resistance value is made use for temperature sensing applications (b) Internally by heat developed by the passage of current through the devices (self heating) and the corresponding change in resistance value is made use for current limiting, inrush current control, and heater applications. NTC THERMISTORS NTC ( Negative Temperature Coefficient ) Thermistors are thermally sensitive resistors which exhibit a decrease in resistance value with increase in its body temperature. NTC Thermistor Terminology 1. Zero - Power resistance value - The Zero-power resistance is the DC resistance value of a Thermistor measured at a specified temperature with a power dissipation by the Thermistor low enough that will result in not more than 0.1% change in resistance value. 2. B-Value constant - B-Value is a material constant of a Thermistor in K which reflects the slope of the Temperature / Resistance curve. Higher the B value, higher the thermal sensitivity of the Thermistor. B-Value is different for each type of Thermistor material and temperature range. Most Thermistor manufacturers report B-Values between 2500K K. 3. Thermal Dissipation Constant - Heat flow characteristics in NTC Thermistor elements and component assemblies are governed by Thermistor shape factors, material properties, thermal coupling conditions and temperature differential of the element to its surroundings. The thermal dissipation constant of a Thermistor, D.C(mW / 0 C) equals the energy or power required to raise the temperature of the Thermistor element by 1 0 C. 4. Thermal Time Constant - The Thermal time constant is the time taken by the Thermistor to change 63.2% of the total difference between its initial temperature and that of its surroundings when dissipating no power. The time constant is very much dependent on the size and finish of a Thermistor. PTC THERMISTORS PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) Thermistors have resistance-temperature characteristic that exhibit a very small negative temperature coefficient until the device reaches a critical temperature that is referred to as Curie temperature or Transition temperature. Above the curie temperature, the devices exhibit sharp rise in resistance. PTC Thermistor Terminology 1. Zero - Power resistance value - The Zero-power resistance is the measured resistance value of the PTC at 25 0 C, with no appreciable self-heat producing current flowing through the Thermistor. 2. Transition Temperature (Ttr) - The Transition temperature or switching temperature is the temperature at which the resistance of the PTC Thermistor begins to rise sharply and it is the temperature at which the resistance of the PTC becomes twice the minimum resistance value. 3. Switching or Tripping current at 25 0 C - It is the minimum amount of current required by the PTC to guarantee switching at 25 0 C. 4. Non-switching or non-tripping current at 25 0 C - It is the maximum amount of current the PTC must be able to pass without switching at 25 0 C. 5. Switching / Tripping Time - It is the time required for switching the devices, while passing the switching current at 25 0 C. 4
