172 7.3 SIMONA PE Multilayer Sheets Sheets for tank manufacture Benefits at a glance Excellent barrier against gases and liquids Corrosion resistance High impact resistance and good rigidity Physiological safety Outstanding thermoforming properties Service temperature range from 50 C to +80 C Suitable for machine welding without impairing barrier properties SIMONA PE Multilayer Sheets are made of polyethylene and feature a barrier layer engineered from EVOH. Owing to the barrier properties of the EVOH layer against liquids and the excellent thermoforming characteristics of polyethylene, SIMONA PE Multilayer Sheets open up new approaches to the design of industrial tanks for the storage and transport of liquid substances such as fuels, solvents, chemicals and perfumes. Design of SIMONA PE Multilayer Sheets SIMONA PE Multilayer Sheets consist of two high-density polyethylene outer layers (PE-HD), an ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) barrier layer to prevent diffusion and adhesive layers on both sides (Figure 1). These two adhesive layers are needed because the barrier plastic, EVOH, has no natural adhesion with PE. In principle, EVOH can be replaced by other barrier materials. The layer design of SIMONA PE Multilayer Sheets can be tailored to suit specific requirements, i. e. it is possible to incorporate different numbers of layers and different layer thicknesses. Any off-cut materials can be re - granulated and, based on a defined materials cycle, used as a regrind layer in the sheet layer design. The regrind can be incorporated either as a single layer on the external wall or as a layer on both sides of the diffusion barrier. 172 Catalogue Semi-Finished Parts 2013

185 7.11 REACH REACH Regulation On 1 June 2007, the European chemicals law which had applied up to that date was replaced by the so-called REACH Regulation (EU Regulation 1907/2006/EC). REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of CHemicals. One of the rules specified by the REACH Regulation is that all substances (chemicals and preparations) which are manufactured in the EU or are imported to the EU have to be pre-registered and registered with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The REACH Regulation applies to chemicals and preparations. Polymers are explicitly excluded from registration and evaluation (as per Article 2 Para. 9). The SIMONA range of products comprises semi-finished parts, pipes and fittings that are made solely of polymer materials. Therefore, they are not subject to the REACH Regulation. As a plastics processing company, we cannot have our products registered, nor are we obliged to. Within the scope of the supply chain described by REACH, plastics processing companies are so-called downstream users. One of our obligations as downstream users is to verify the fact that our own suppliers handle the raw materials delivered to us in a REACH-compliant manner. We met our obligations within this area during the pre-registration phase from If the availability of individual raw materials is limited by REACH in future, we will switch to REACH-compliant alternatives. In addition, we are obliged to dis close information about the constituents of our products: we confirm that our products do not contain any substances in con centrations of > 0.1 % (w/w) which are on the candidate list (Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern, SVHC) issued by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). As downstream users, we are enjoined to inform our suppliers how the raw materials delivered to us are used. In our case, this includes the manufacture of semi-finished plastics, pipes, fittings and finished parts by means of extrusion, pressing and injection moulding. This represents the "identified use" of these materials. In order to improve the ex - change of information along the supply chain, it is advantageous to also receive information about how our customers subject our products to further processing. Please feel free to pass this information on to us by contacting reach@simona.de. 200 SIMONA Scrapers Professional welding in accordance with DVS Correct welding is demonstrated at the SIMONA Technology Centre. Welding of plastics Plastic welding refers to the permanent joining of thermoplastics by applying heat and pressure, with or without the use of additional materials. All welding processes are per - formed when the materials in the boundary areas of the surface being joined are in a ductile state. Here, the linear molecules of the parts being joined and pressed together link up and entwine to form a homogeneous material bond. Only plastics of the same category, e.g. PP and PP, and within these groups only those with identical or similar (adjacent) molecular weight and the same density, can be welded to one another; colour does not have to be taken into account. One exception to this rule is the bonding of rigid PVC to acrylic glass, where the strength of the welded seam is satisfactory. It has been designed to provide you with key information to assist you in your dayto-day operations. SIMCHEM comprises a list of 4,000 substances and proprietary products. Additionally, it offers valuable information about our materials and the general properties of plastics. SIMCHEM a database on the chemical resistance of SIMONA materials, featuring more than 4,000 listed substances. After six CD-ROM editions, we have now launched a fully revised online version of SIMCHEM. The full range of information previously accessible via the installed CD version can now be accessed online at any time by all users. Additionally, registered users can also take advantage of extended features, e.g. a tool to generate a PDF file of search results. Those who prefer using an offline solution are able to download a version of the application that includes an online update function. All information contained in this database reflects our current scope of knowledge at the date of publication and is based on the findings from iersion testing as part of which test specimens were subjected to different temperatures in the medium in question, free from external stresses. The data derived from testing is complemented by case study reports, recoendations by raw material manufacturers as well as extensive data relating to standards, directives and guidelines.
