CASR (Centre of Advanced Steel Research) in University of Oulu and in Finland Science with Arctic Attitude Jukka Kömi 22/2/2018 University of Oulu

Scientific profiling areas Digital solutions in sensing and interactions Near-Earth space environment Earth and near-space system and environmental change 6G wireless enabled smart society Physics for Physics strong, for sustainable tough and steel sustainable steel Ubiquitous wireless sensor systems Arctic interactions and global change Creating sustainability by materials and systems Understanding Co-evolution humans of humans in change and new technologies Fibrosis in chronic diseases and cancer Molecular and environmental basis for life-long health University of Oulu

CASR research consortium in OU 2006 CASR forms at the University of Oulu a national centre of expertise focusing on the chemical, mechanical and physical metallurgy of steels, including control and information engineering and modelling. CASR s mission is to execute and co-ordinate high-level national and international research in the field of advanced steels. Further, it is to ensure the attraction of education in steel metallurgy by developing and participating in national and international education programs on both Master and Doctor levels. University of Oulu

Sustainable steel production and use of UHSS Production knowledge is the really good in the North Much more we can achieved by using high-strength steels ü Weight reduction ü Reduced consumption of natural resources in production ü Reduced consumption of fuels ü Increased payloads in timber trucks ü Increased service life 20 0 Nordic EU average NAFTA Russia China India Some innovative on-going projects I Ultrahigh strength steel wit good toughness 1. TMCP + direct quenched process for > 1100 MPa steels 2. Optimizing the microstructure (nanobainite, UFGS martensite) II Minimized CO 2 emissions 1. Implementation of biomass into ironmaking processes 2. Replace carbon based reduction by hydrogen based steelmaking ~ 50% CO 2 ~ 95% CO 2 III Zero waste plant 1. Internal recycling of wastes by agglomeration and injection 2. Slags as product ~ 90% waste ~ 90% waste University of Oulu

Examples of special steel products developed in Finland Trucks - Concrete Truck: Loss of weight using ultrahigh strength steels 950 kg èsaving litre fuel and CO 2 -emission decreasing 11 t (10 year/ km) - Timber Trucks: loss of weight using ultrahigh strength steels 400 kg èsaving litre fuel and CO 2 -emission decreasing 26 t (10 year / km) - Truck Container: Loss of weight using ultrahigh strength steels 800 kg èsaving litre fuel and CO 2 -emission decreasing 160 t (10 years / km) Loader Cranes - Bronto Skylift has the world record in truck-mounted hydraulic platform booms, reaching 112 meters.
