4 Bettis EHO Bulletin EHO EN Rev. 1 Section 1: Executive Summary This bulletin describes the corrosion resistant characteristics and field-proven use of aluminum alloy 356 and aluminum alloy 6061 components in the Bettis Electro-Hydraulic Operator (EHO). Both types of aluminum have low copper content to avoid galvanic corrosion and are widely used in applications requiring high corrosion resistance: Aluminum 356 is commonly used in aircraft fittings and marine hardware, aluminum 6061 is commonly used in industrial and marine atmospheres such as bridge rails and transportation equipment. In addition to the natural corrosive protection of the two types of low copper aluminum used in the Bettis EHO, a standard two coat Baril paint system is provided on all surfaces exposed to the environment. 1 Executive Summary

5 Bulletin EHO EN Rev. 1 Bettis EHO Section 2: Aluminum Alloy 356 The hard anodized aluminum 356 was selected due to the alloys inherent corrosion resistance and cold temperature applications. Due to these characteristics, this alloy is commonly used in marine atmosphere environments, marine hardware, and aircraft fittings. To verify the corrosion resistance of our design, we have performed a 1,000-hour of salt spray exposure in accordance to ASTM B117-03, Section 15 standard procedure for operating salt spray (fog) apparatus at Touchstone Research Laboratory. Water used for the salt solution was in accordance with ASTM D1193. The findings showed all aluminum component surfaces show no impact at all from the salt spray test. Data for the 1,000-hour salt spray test on the aluminum alloy 356 can be provided upon request. 6 Bettis EHO Bulletin EHO EN Rev. 1 Section 3: Aluminum Alloy 6061 The aluminum 6061 was selected due to its corrosion resistance and low temperature characteristics. This alloy contains less copper than the aluminum 356 alloy and is therefore more corrosion resistant. For the Bettis EHO, the aluminum 6061 is hard anodized and Teflon impregnated, which further increases the material s corrosion resistance. The hard anodizing penetrates into the material and builds a film on the surface. We designate total for our hard anodizing and therefore is penetrated into the material and is film build up. This aluminum alloy has been used for over 40 years in numerous off shore applications all over the world. It is also commonly used in heavy duty structures in marine applications such as bridge rails and transportation equipment. 7 Bulletin EHO EN Rev. 1 Bettis EHO Section 4: Standard Two Coat Baril Paint System As an additional layer of environmental protection, we provide a standard Baril, two coat paint system on all surfaces exposed to the environment. The first coat is a moisture cured zinc layer followed by a dual cure aliphatic polyurea final layer. Final dry film thickness of the coating system is 6 mils or 152 µm. We also provide an option for an Ameron International three coat paint system designed for offshore applications. Other coating systems can be provided upon request.
