2 vantguard Redefining anti-corrosion Hempel introduces vantguard, a new innovative anti-corrosion technology based on activated Zinc and locked in to our new range of high performance protective coatings. vantguard reduces the effects of corrosion and offers advanced protection. This increased durability has been proven in extensive tests. 4 What is the expected life time of a system with vantguard? ISO part 6 testing happens according to the schemes below: Low durability: 2-5 years Medium durability: 5-15 years High durability: More than 15 years vantguard products tested successfully in the high durability category.

5 How does vantguard work compared to ordinary Zinc epoxies? In current Zinc rich epoxies only the Zinc closest to the steel is used. The rest is not. vantguard uses activated Zinc, which protects the steel in three ways. Barrier - a coating with very low water permeability that becomes a physical barrier against water, oxygen and salts. Inhibition - involves a chemical reaction in the coating system that minimises or prevents the corrosion process. Galvanic - Zinc in the coating has a higher electrochemical reactivity than iron and acts as a sacrificial anode when corrosion starts to take place.

6 Is vantguard compliant with ISO, NORSOK and SSPC standards? Yes, external laboratories have tested vantguard coatings and they have passed globally recognised standards including ISO part 6, NORSOK M-501 revision 6, SSPC paint 20 type II.

7 How does vantguard perform better than other similar products in the market? Extensive studies by several acknowledged Universities have shown that the new technology creates activated Zinc through the combination of Zinc, glass spheres and a patented activator. The unique result is that vantguard coatings provide Barrier, Inhibition and Galvanic protection.

8 If glass spheres break, will that be an issue? Hempel applies a special handling procedure during the production process to ensure the glass spheres do not break. small percentage could break during airless application. Several laboratory tests have shown that there is no impact on corrosion or mechanical properties even after significant breakage of spheres provoked on purpose.

9 Can this product be used in 1 and 2 coat systems? Yes, coatings containing vantguard technology can be used in many different system combinations, just as our regular Zinc epoxies.

10 s vantguard is a new technology, do you have any references or a track record for the products that contain it? Yes. The first experimental batches of coatings containing vantguard technology were produced back in During the development phase, vantguard has proven its performance in a variety of accelerated laboratory tests. Since September 2013, vantguard has been applied in several projects all over the world on different types of steel structures.

11 Can coatings with and without vantguard be specified together? Yes, regular Zinc epoxies may be specified along side coatings containing vantguard technology. However, most Zinc epoxies will not have the same advantages in terms of anti-corrosive and mechanical properties that vantguard products benefit from.

12 Can Hempel supply globally? Yes, vantguard products are available globally and are supported by Hempel s Technical Service Team and local sales representatives.

13 Do vantguard coatings need to be applied using special equipment or techniques? No. Products containing vantguard technology have excellent application properties and equipment. irless spray is recommended. The coating is tolerant even with high DFTs meaning less rework due to cracking during application. The coating displays high tolerance to different climatic conditions during application, under extreme thickness, temperature and humidity.

15 Is Hempel maintaining the zinc content standards within ISO, NORSOK and SSPC with these new products? Yes, we keep the zinc content by weight according to recognised global standards (ISO part 6, NORSOK M-501 revision 6, SSPC paint 20 type II) supported by certificates obtained in external laboratories. The use of low weight functional fillers enhance mechanical properties as well as increasing the barrier effect to reinforce anti-corrosive properties. s an added benefit, the specific gravity of the paint can be reduced making the handling of the paint containers more friendly to the applicators.
