1 Carboset 514H Acrylic Colloidal Dispersion TECHNICAL DATA SHEET General Description Carboset 514H resin is an acrylic colloidal dispersion polymer supplied in ammonia water. Carboset 514H resin dries to a clear, water-resistant, non-tacky thermoplastic film. This polymer exhibits excellent adhesion to a variety of metal and plastic substrates. The film applications of Carboset 514H resin can provide mild corrosion resistance under high humidity conditions for various metal substrates. Small metal parts, tools and machinery can be given a clear coating to protect appearance between the time of manufacture and the time of sale. Coatings of Carboset 514H resin can also be removed with mild alkaline solutions. Suggested Applications Brass coatings Metal dip coatings Dry film lubricants Temporary protective coatings Fastener coatings Performance Features Fast dry Hard films Excellent adhesion High gloss Typical Physical Properties* Appearance Translucent liquid Total Solids by Weight, % 40 Total Solids by Volume, % 38 Density, Pounds/Gallon 8.8 Acid Number 65 MFFT 10 C Tg 28 C Brookfield Viscosity, 25 C, cps 350 ph 7.0 Volatiles Water, Ammonia *Property values represent typical results only and are not to be considered specifications. 5 Page 5 Formulation Suggestions and Raw Material Information Temporary or permanent coatings can be made with Carboset 514H resin. This thermoplastic polymer will form clear, glossy water-resistant films that can be removed with any dilute alkaline solution. By cross-linking the carboxyl groups Carboset 514H resin with epoxies, melamine formaldehyde resins, multivalent metal ions or polyfunctional aziridines, permanent coatings can be obtained. Carboset 514H resin has excellent clarity, develops good gloss film characteristics, and demonstrates excellent flow and leveling. The MW and available acid functionality designed into Carboset 514H resin give it excellent pigment wetting properties as well. IMPROVED WATER RESISTANCE Improvements in water resistance can be made through the addition of a multivalent ion complex, such as zinc or zirconium. Care must be taken when making additions of these complexes so as not to precipitate the resin out of solution through resin shock. Examples of these types of ion complexes are: Zinc Ammonium Carbonate: Zinplex Ultra Additives Chemcor ZAC Chemical Corp. of America WW-901 Carroll Scientific, Inc. Zirconium Ammonium Carbonate: Baycote 20 Magnesium Elektronic, Inc. Water resistance can be further improved by the addition of a wax emulsion. Typically, a 5-8% addition, based on formula weight, will significantly improve the water resistance. A blended wax emulsion of polyethylene and paraffin has been found to be the most effective. Examples of some wax emulsions are: Chemcor Emulsion 12 Michem 110 Chemical Corp. of America Michelman Chemicals SURFACE FLOW AND LEVELING The surface flow and leveling, as well as substrate wetting, can be greatly improved through the addition of up to 1% by formula weight of a flow or slip agent. Excellent surface modifiers for Carboset 514H resin include: WREAMA DC-14 Byk 301 PCI Group, Inc. Dow Chemical Byk Chemie DEFOAMING Effective defoamers for Carboset 514H resin are: Tego Foamex 1488 DEE FO 97-2 Patcote 519 Tego Chemie Ultra Additives American Ingredients VISCOSITY CONTROL The viscosity of Carboset 514H resin depends upon the total solids and ph of the system. In general, an increase of either the ph or total solids of Carboset 514H resin will increase the viscosity of the system. Water is typically used to dilute the resin, thereby lowering total solids and viscosity. Certain bases produce a more dramatic increase in viscosity when used to raise the ph of the system. Defoamer addition will help reduce foam during manufacturing. Defoaming can also be improved during spray application with the addition of 1-3% of isopropyl alcohol. The alcohol should be premixed with water before adding. FLASH RUSTING When applying a waterborne coating over steel substrates, the potential for flash rusting is present. To prevent this, the addition of a 10% Ammonium Benzoate solution is typically used: Heiscore-XAB Raybo 60 Caschem Raybo, Inc.
