11 Brazilian Operations & Projects Alcan was a pioneer of the aluminium industry in Brazil 1940: starts activities in Brazil under the corporate name of Alumínio do Brasil S. A. Alubrasil. 1950: becomes the first producer of primary aluminum on industrial scale in the Southern Hemisphere, after acquiring Elquisa - Eletroquímica Brasileira S.A. 1960s: Alumínio do Brasil S. A. Alubrasil starts to be called Alcan Alumínio do Brasil S. A. Alcan Brasil and uncovers a huge bauxite reserves in the Amazon, within the Porto Trombetas region, State of Para. Also creates the Aratu industrial complex, in the State of Bahia. 1979: Inauguration of Mineração Rio do Norte S. A. MRN. Circa 1984: Installation of the rolling mill for production of cable foil s: Incorporation of Alcan Composites Brasil S. A., for manufacturing aluminum panels with prevailing use on construction external façades and acquisition by Rio Tinto forming Rio Tinto Alcan. Exploration office based in Brasilia with exploration programs in the states of Bahia, Para and throughout Brazil. Joint-venture operations 12% interest in MRN bauxite mine 10% in Alumar alumina refinery Amargosa Project in Bahia Bauxite mine and Alumina refinery 11
