2 UTILISATION An alternative to waste landfills Commercial and industrial waste is very well suited for use as refuse-derived fuel as it usually has a very high calorific value and low biogenic content. Firstly, the commercial waste is shredded. After ferrous metals have been removed by means of an overband magnet, the material flow continues to the screening stage. Oversize of over 150 mm is sorted further by hand. Non-ferrous metals are removed from the fine fraction by an eddy current separator. The fine fraction is screened out to optimise the separation precision of the downstream wind sifter. The heavy fraction is removed here. The wind sifter light fraction can be used as a high-calorific refuse-derived fuel with over 20 MJ/kg. Plastics containing halogens are also removed to ensure clean combustion. This is done with a sen- sor-supported sorting method based on near-infrared spectroscopy. Our approach is to isolate the NIR sorting process in its own process line. This can run 24 hours a day.
