1 FR-1410 Decabromodiphenyl ethane Application Data Sheet for High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) FR-1410 is offered by ICL-IP as a flame retardant additive containing 82% aromatic bromine. Its high bromine content coupled with its exceptional thermal stability makes it the material of choice for a large variety of applications. Its chemical structure and properties are shown in Figure 1. Main features about FR-1410 are: Its chemistry is not related with diphenyl oxide Being RoHS compliant, it can be used in the production and sales of electrical and electronic equipment in Europe It is commonly used in styrenic homo- and copolymers like HIPS, polyolefins (PP, PE and their copolymers), and several engineering thermoplastics like PBT and polyamides. It is suitable for both UL-94 V-2 and V-0 ratings. It offers an optimal balance of properties. 2 Thermal stability Thermogravimetric analysis of FR-1410 (Table 1) reflects its high thermal stability allowing high processing temperatures. Its thermal stability combined with excellent resistance to hydrolysis, makes it the product of choice when recyclability is an issue. 3 FR efficiency FR-1410, containing 82% aromatic bromine exhibits good flame retardancy at low loading. Table 2 provides indicative formulations and properties achievable with FR-1410 in HIPS. 4 J/m Caring for your Future-Today! Good impact properties FR-1410 is also the flame retardant of choice when fairly good impact properties are needed as can be seen in Table 2 and Figure 2. Figure 2: Izod notched impact in FR HIPS Ref no FR FR-1410 V-2 FR-1410 V-0 0 Fire-Safety FR-1410 (decabromodiphenyl ethane produced by ICL-IP) may be considered as an important building block to provide safety against the danger of fire. Indeed, fire safety is still an area of high concern in developed countries. In Europe million fires are reported per year (2006), resulting in 20,000 25,000 fire deaths and 250, ,000 fire injuries. Also, in the US 2.3 million fires occurred in One major fire cause is to be found in Electrical and Electronic (E&E) equipment. Moreover, when exposed to an external ignition, this type of equipment often plays a key role in creating fatal or near fatal flashover conditions. The housings of E&E equipment, often made of HIPS, if not treated with fire retardants are easily ignited and can contribute to the fast spreading of fire. This area is not always taken enough into consideration in consumer protection legislation.

5 MFI - g/10 min (200 C-5kg) Caring for your Future-Today! The use of FR-1410 in HIPS for E&E equipment may prevent fatal electrical fire accidents and property damage. Furthermore, depending on the circumstances, FR-1410 can naturally prevent important environmental damage caused by such fires. Melt-flow and impact An interesting approach suggested to build optimized flame retardant systems based on FR-1410 in matter of melt-flow and impact properties is by its combination with the melt blendable FR-245 [tris(tribromophenoxy) triazine]. FR-245is indeed a major flame retardant partner for filler-like flame retardants such as FR-1410 to mold large dimension housings of electronic equipment made of styrenic copolymers. These combinations result in optimal combinations of melt flow and impact properties (Fig. 3 and 4). Fig. 3: Melt flow of HIPS UL-94 V-0 (1.6 mm) FR /50 FR-245/FR-1410 FR-1410

FR-1410 s chemical structure is designed to eliminate any risk of formation of brominated dioxins and/or furans. As part of an ongoing Product Stewardship Program and Customer oriented policy, ICL-IP is committed to implement further toxicological and environmental tests if needed. Applications Recommended applications of FR-1410 in HIPS and its alloys are: housings of electronic devices, audio and video equipment and ink or toner cartridges (Figures 2 and 3). In these applications, FR-1410 exhibits its inherent advantages over other products, with its cost efficiency, good impact and thermal stability. FR-1410 is suitable for applications with UV or light exposure. 1 Further information available upon request
