DEAR VISITOR, 60 years of mining tradition and technology of the future. On the premises of the former Queen Elisabeth coal mine, CarboTech AC GmbH has close ties to the mining tradition in Essen (Germany). In 1958, one hundred years after the Essen Mining Association was founded, our company was founded as the mining research company Bergbau-Forschung GmbH. The commissioning of the first large-scale pilot plant for the manufacturing of pure bituminous coal and activated carbon took place already two years earlier. MAMS, MAMS, MAMS. Mobile Adsorber Rental Systems clearly are the current trend. We would like to introduce to you three adsorbers with which a multitude of gas and liquid phase applications can be realised flexibly and cost-efficiently. In addition, you are cordially invited to find out more about our comprehensive product portfolio Made in Germany and our services as well as our commercial goods. Come see us and talk with our experts about your adsorption requirements. We are looking forward to meeting you! Technology of the future: fluidised-bed activation. Read another article on this subject matter. Dr. Thomas Doege Ulrich Bencker Julian Strotmann TECHNOLOGY OF THE FUTURE: FLUIDISED-BED ACTIVATION Traditionally, the production of activated carbon takes place in shaft furnaces or rotary kilns. CarboTech is the one and only production plant in the world which uses the unique fluidisedbed process for the activation and reactivation of granular and extruded activated carbons. This process was initially developed by the mining research company Bergbau-Forschung. The erection of the first fluidised bed oven already took place in LARGE SHARE OF MICROPORES Activated carbon manufactured in this manner is characterised by a large share of micropores relative to the total amount of pores. For sophisticated adsorption applications as well as for the treatment of landfill leachate or solvent recovery, this characteristic is of particular importance. INTENSIVE EXCHANGE OF HEAT AND SUBSTANCES NEW ENERGY RECOVERY In fluidised bed activation, the source material is introduced in multiple chambers located above one another. Through a perforated gas distributor plate, reactant gases are pressed in which effect a fluidised, i.e., liquid-like condition of the fill. In the fluidised bed, a close contact occurs between the product being activated and the activation gas, leading to an intense exchange of heat and substances in a homogeneous temperature field. In order to be able to capitalise on the advantages of fluidised bed activation for the manufacturing of activated carbon products in line with market requirements even in times of volatile energy prices and high environmental requirements, an energy recovery system was installed on the activation plants of CarboTech in late 2017/early As a result of the largest investment in the firm s recent history, the waste heat generated by the process is

now being utilised for the manufacturing and generation of steam and hot air, for the drying of reactivates, and as heat supply on the whole factory site. Additionally, the primary energy feed necessary for the thermal post-combustion is being reduced by the energetic synergy of activation and reactivation and by state-of-the-art automatic control systems. All electrical units of the plants have been upgraded to the latest energy standard, IE3, and the energy-intensive process water network has been replaced by a modern free-cooling system. Additionally, the whole lighting of our factory was transitioned to LED technology with sensor technology. FIT FOR THE FUTURE YOUR BENEFITS - LONGER SERVICE LIFE - LOWER OPERATING COSTS - HIGHER PROCESS SAFETY - BETTER SYSTEM AVAILABILITY - SAFE ADHERENCE TO LIMIT VALUES With the completion of this investment project, the fluidised bed activation is energetically on par with the other activation processes, at significantly superior adsorption properties of the activated carbon manufactured. As such, the location in Essen is ready for the future and our customers can continue to count of high quality activates and reactivates from CarboTech.

ADSORPTION WITH CERTAINTY Where does the special market position of CarboTech AC GmbH result from and what does it mean in the context of adsorption with certainty? A look at the company's history shows that process and application technology expertise as well as the manufacturing and refinement of activated carbon are closely interconnected in our company. DEVELOPMENTS AND PATENTS Construction and operation of a large-scale pilot plant for the manufacturing of activated carbon on the premises of the former Queen Elisabeth coking plant Development of carbon molecular sieves (CMS) for the manufacturing of nitrogen and hydrogen with high purities by the mining research company Bergbau-Forschung GmbH Granting of various patents for pressure swing adsorption systems (PSA systems) for the manufacturing of nitrogen and hydrogen purification to Bergbau- Forschung GmbH Development of the dry DeSOx and DeNOx processes with activated carbon Development of the Mobile Adsorber Rental Systems (MAMS) 2004 Development of the CarbonCatalyst for NOx removal APPLICATION-ORIENTED TECHNICAL CONSULTING In addition to the activates from the unique fluidised bed activation and high-quality activated carbons of long-standing production and trade partners, CarboTech also offers its comprehensive application-technology expertise. This includes consultations regarding the selection of activated carbon, service life prognoses, and adsorber sizings as well as recommendations regarding safe and secure system operation and regarding the taking back of used activated carbons. MODERN LABORATORY WITH COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OPTIONS The manufacturing and trade of high-quality activated carbon products requires a highly efficient laboratory that can verify and therefore guarantee the defined properties at any time. The equipment necessary for this is also ready to be used for general adsorption technology questions and services, such as for load prognoses, expert opinions, process optimisations or development work. Quite often, the effectiveness and the benefit of adsorptive purification with activated carbon is determined in advance in case of novel or complex tasks in the areas of exhaust air and wastewater.

IMPREGNATED ACTIVATED CARBONS Activated carbons are superbly suited to be carriers of catalysts and other chemicals. As such, via impregnation, the application spectrum of activated carbon can be expanded beyond physical adsorption. CarboTech has many years of experience in the area of impregnation that allows for a particularly homogeneous distribution of the chemicals utilised. SELECTION OF IMPREGNATIONS AND THEIR APPLICATION Potassium carbonate Potassium iodide Copper Permanganate Phosphoric acid Sulphur Silver Removal of acidic components from gases (e.g. hydrochloric acid) Removal of sulphur compounds from gases under the presence of oxygen (e.g. hydrogen sulphide) Removal of formaldehyde from gases Removal of sulphur compounds in absence of oxygen Removal of alkaline components from gases (e.g. ammonia) Removal of mercury from gases Protects against growth of mould and bacteria on activated carbon

MAMS, MAMS, MAMS Increasing environmental awareness as well as well as strict regulations in the trades and industry have the effect that gas and wastewater flows must be cleaned before being released into the environment. The Mobile Adsorber Rental System (MAMS), developed by CarboTech about 25 years ago, provides a practical, efficient, flexible, and cost-efficient rental solution, without tapping into the investment budget. SERVICE PARTNERSHIP The customer operates the mobile adsorber; the specialists of CarboTech take care of the system, the logistics, and where applicable the reactivation or disposal of the loaded activated carbon. 8 REACTIVATION OF LOADED ACTIVATED CARBONS After a certain service life, the activated carbons used in all adsorption processes are exhausted and have to be regenerated or replaced. CarboTech is offering the reactivation as a service to its customers. In the reactivation plants at Essen, the used activated carbons are reactivated under the conditions of activated carbon manufacturing. The unique fludised-bed activation process is utilized for the reactivation as well. The adsorbed substances are completely removed from the activated carbons and thermally converted. The original adsorption capacity is being recovered and the products can subsequently be utilised in the adsorption processes again.
