Terminology Standard Expanded Metal expanded metal as it comes off the machine. Flattened Expanded Metal metal which has been passed through flattening rolls (cold rolled) turning the strands and bonds down to provide a flat surface. The flattening operation reduces the thickness (gauge) of the metal and stretches the pattern. Bond apex of the opening where strands intersect Camber bow in sheet which may occur parallel to LWD or SWD(see tolerance section) Design Size actual design measured from a point on the bond to a corresponding point on the adjacent bond Opening Size actual opening size of diamond Overall Thickness thickness from top to bottom of expanded sheet LWD long way of design LWO long way of opening SWD short way of design nominal dimension (center to center of bond) SWO short way of opening Strand the sides of the expanded metal design Strand Thickness gauge or thickness of metal expanded Strand Width amount of metal fed under dies to produce one strand Finishes and Treatments Have a Question? We are anxious to help! See diagram on p. 16 Deburring removal of burrs and sharp edges by wire brushing 9"-72" SWD, 50"-150" LWD. Not all styles will be deburred. Electro-galvanized a zinc finish for sheets to help provide weather resistance. Hot Dip Galvanizing a protective coating of zinc; may have a rough uneven appearance. Patterns smaller than 1/4" do not lend themselves to hot dip galvanizing. Ask our Customer Service Specialists for assistance in making a selection. Leveling a plane of the sheet leveled without flattening strands or bonds. Mill Finish Plain Steel expanded metal is lightly oiled and should be cleaned before finishing. The most common cleaning method is an acid or solvent bath with a water rinse. Aluminum clean with a non-etching chemical or detergent, then rinse and dry thoroughly. A wax or non-wax base cleaner can be used. 3 BOND SWO STRAND WIDTH LWD LWO STRAND THICKNESS (GAUGE) Bond Shearing Shearing cuts through where two strands intersect. Material is cut on or near center line of bond. Eliminates prongs or jagged edges. Please check with us for bond shearing over 48". Tolerances LWD or SWD ± 1/2 design size. (Please ask for special bond tolerances on meshes 1/4" and smaller) Random Shearing Random Sheared this type of shearing to tolerance generally leaves jagged edges/prongs and/or incomplete design patterns. Tolerances LWD or SWD ± 1/16" on standard and flattened expanded ± 1/4" on grating and catwalk. Shearing Examples Product Details SWD Shearing Tolerances Terminology Balance Shearing (LWD only. Expanded to SWD dimension) provides matching sections for continuous catwalk or flooring applications. Closed diamonds SWD, cut with either open or closed diamonds to obtain ordered length LWD. Bond Shearing See example at left. Camber measured placing straight edge on concave side of sheet parallel to LWD touching both ends of the sheet. Maximum distance from edge of expanded metal to straight edge is the camber. (A sheet may have a width tolerance of ±0" and still have camber.) See Example B SWD 1/16" per foot of length LWD Standard 1/16" per foot of length Flat 3/32" per foot of length Centerline Shearing finished piece symmetrical, about a row of diamonds at center of piece--open diamonds both SWD and LWD. Flattening limited to 72" maximum one dimension. Flattened sheet thickness shall be ±10% of the published thickness. Manufactured to size closed diamonds on all sides. Size tolerances are the same as for stock size sheets. Unless otherwise specified, material will be produced to plus side of the tolerance. Out of Square (measured using 90 angle). Expanded metal sheets are not perfectly square as manufactured.
