1 Page 1 of 5 ULTRASONIC COUPLANT POWDER APPEARANCE: Bright Yellow Fine Powder DENSITY@ 20 C: 0.70 Grams/CC FLASH POINT (PM): Non-flammable PH VALUE: 9.0 ph(5% solution) SOLUBILITY: Water Soluble forms a thick yellow gel SULPHUR: <50 P.P.M* HALOGENS: <50 P.P.M* CORROSION: Non-corrosive to most metals TEMPERATURE RANGE: -5 C to 70 C REMOVABILITY: Water, alcohol or similar solvent *NB: Dependant on the quality of the water used to produce the gel When mixed with clean water, Sonagel D1 forms a stable clear yellow gel specifically designed for ultrasonic inspection and it is non-toxic and safe for the environment. Sonagel D1 is used at a concentration of 50 grams per litre of water, but a thinner gel can be obtained by reducing the powder content to a minimum of 10 grams per litre. This product is designed for use on all types of metallic surface and is especially suited to solving the problems of rough, pitted, uneven surfaces allowing smooth probe movement during testing. The thixotropic properties of this couplant give excellent wetting and acoustic transmission and do not allow the product to flow all over the test area. This makes it very economical to use as you only cover the working area and not the whole piece. Sonagel D1 incorporates corrosion inhibitors and wetting agents and is free of VOC s and other hazardous materials. However, it does contain a special tracer to enable areas to be checked for coverage, but the couplant is still easily removed with water or solvent wipes. NB: This product is designed for use on site for specific spot tests, where it is impractical to carry or deliver (ready to use) bulk couplant. (Sonagel O, Sonagel W) Sonagel D1 is available in 1-kilo plastic tubs. Water based W, oil based Sonagel O and high temperature Sonagel HT are also available as standard. Other couplants may also be supplied upon request.

2 Page 2 of 5 HEALTH & SAFETY DATA SHEET Product Name: Sonagel D1 Application: Ultrasonic inspection of components and structures 1. COMPOSITION/INFORMATION OF INGREDIENTS A mixture of gelling agent, corrosion inhibitors, wetting agents and pigment (Contains Disodium Tetraborate less than 25 %). None of the component materials are listed in Chemicals (Hazard information and packaging for supply) (Amendment Regulations Approved Supply List 4th Edition). 2. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION R6 Irritating to the eyes May cause skin irritation May be harmful by inhalation or if swallowed. FIRST AID MEASURES Skin: Remove contaminated clothing, wash off with soap and water. Flush skin with lukewarm water Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes while holding eyes open. If irritation persists seek medical attention Ingestion: Powder will gel, rinse mouth with water. Drink plenty of water. Seek medical attention if large quantities are ingested. Inhalation: Immediately remove from exposure 4. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES Suitable Extinguishing Media: Water fog, Alcohol resistant foam, Sand, Carbon Dioxide or dry powder. Special Protective Equipment: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes.

If mist or vapours generated wear suitable respirator Environmental Precautions: Contain powder in spillage area. Methods for cleaning: Sweep up or vacuum up as much of the dry powder as possible. Flush away remaining traces with copious amounts of water. 6. HANDLING AND STORAGE Handling: Open containers and use product in well-ventilated areas, avoid contact with skin and eyes Storage: Store in sealed containers in covered storage areas 7. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION Exposed control Limits and Source: Disodium Tetraborate Pentahydrate-1mg/cu.m. (8 hours time weighted average) Occupational exposure standard from table 2, EH40/98, Occupational exposure limit 1998 (HSE) Take measures to prevent: Respiratory: Ensure good ventilation. Absorbent masks or respirators will be required if vapour build up occurs. Hands: Plastic surgical-type gloves recommended Skin: Normal work-wear overalls unless there is a risk of frequent splashing, when impervious aprons are recommended. Eyes: Wear safety glasses or chemical goggles where there is any risk of product splashing in the eyes.
