2 Imerys has launched a new, natural, premium talc range ImerCare SheerSilk and ImerCare Velluto. These two high-performance talc grades have been engineered using patented technology to obtain an innovative structure which enhances cohesion and imparts multiple optical and sensory properties to make-up powders. The silky softness and high brightness of ImerCare SheerSilk and Velluto are highly prized for cosmetics applications. ImerCare SheerSilk and Velluto are sourced from two different Imerys mines, one in the French Pyrenees and the other in the Italian Alps. Each mine possesses its own geological DNA conferring specific attributes to each grade: ImerCare SheerSilk for luminous make-up powders ImerCare Velluto for high coverage powder foundations ImerCare SheerSilk and Velluto demonstrate high cohesion Force (N) ImerCare SheerSilk ImerCare Velluto Conventional talc Nylon 12 Starch Synthetic mica Breaking Force = 14.5N Non cohesive discs Breaking Force = 12N Breaking Force = 5.5N Distance of penetration (mm) Fracture resistance of sample discs pressed at 1500psi The fracture resistance of pressed tablets was tested using a Lloyd TA1 texture analyzer which measures the penetration force (loading rate 100mm/s) of a spherical probe (diameter 4mm) in the tablet. The force increases during the penetration test to reach a maximal value when the tablet breaks (breaking force). The higher the breaking force, the more cohesive the sample disc. As most other ingredients used in make-up formulations cannot be pressed easily, ImerCare SheerSilk and Velluto can be added to the formulation to obtain excellent cohesion performance.

ImerCare SheerSilk is an excellent base for highly pigmented, high-brilliance eyeshadows. ImerCare SheerSilk imparts a natural, lustrous finish to blushes.

4 ImerCare Velluto A new, high-performance talc for high coverage powder foundations Sourced in the French Pyrenees, ImerCare Velluto is engineered to obtain a high coverage effect in powder formulations. It is an ideal base for concealers and powder foundations where it imparts a velvety, unctuous feel, an even skin look and a smooth satin finish. ImerCare Velluto imparts good coverage and a smooth satin finish to skin foundations. ImerCare Velluto confers a flawless skin tone, masking uneven patches and providing a smooth satin finish. Certain other ingredients, such as titanium dioxide, show up wrinkles and do not provide the same smooth surface: ImerCare Velluto Titanium dioxide Method to measure homogeneity, coverage and colour Pressed powder formulations containing 80% ImerCare Velluto and titanium dioxide were applied onto the skin using a cosmetic brush applicator. The skin was placed under a digital microscope in reflectance mode (magnification=20%) and images taken of the surface to see the different make up effects: pigment homogeneity, coverage, colour.

5 ImerCare SheerSilk and Velluto are compatible with wet processes Pressed powders are increasingly prepared using a water slurry pressing method. The ability of each ingredient to blend with water and dry without cracking are key parameters for wet processes. Unlike conventional talc grades on the market, ImerCare SheerSilk and Velluto can easily be used in wet processes where they prevent cracking. Two formulations were tested: a blush based on a conventional talc grade and an innovative blush based on ImerCare SheerSilk (see Bonne Mine formulation, page 3). Results were observed immediately. Due to their specific engineered morphology, ImerCare SheerSilk and Velluto demonstrate excellent spreadability and have long lasting properties, making them ideal for long wear formulations.

6 Compliance All Imerys cosmetic products are natural, pure, chemically inert, and offer good skin tolerance. They are not treated with chemicals during processing.
