Voting body membership changes Brian Johnson of Hickman, Williams & Company will be replacing Jim Csonka of Hickman, Williams & Company. 4. Subcommittee Membership changes Brian Johnson has agreed to remain the Chair for the Process Committee and Lizeth Medina will remain the V-Chair. The Chair for the Properties Subcommittee John McGoldrick will retire. Anhua Yu will be taking over as Chair. We still need a V-Chair for this committee. The Applications Committee chair Scott Gledhill and V-Chair Marc King will remain for the next 3 years. Rob Logan has agreed to be the V-Chair for the Standards Committee Brandon Reneau, the current chair for the Research Committee, will retire and Vadim Pikhovich will become the new Chair for 3 years. Lizeth Medina of Neenah Foundry has agreed to become our new V-Chair for the next 3 years. 5. New Ideas for Projects Using Copper to Treat Pearlitic Ductile Iron Contaminated with Boron - Further Studies #54 - Rick Gundlach Since there were numerous objections, the group has asked Rick Gundlach to re-submit the proposal to satisfy the objections. There were some attachments that were missing. This will need to be sent out to the Voting Body again. Grain Refinement: A Means to Improve the Properties of Ductile Iron - Rick Gundlach The Voting Body did vote on this project and there were 20 Yes votes and 0 no votes. There were 5 non responses. This proposal will be delivered to the Board for funding. Also we plan on sharing this project 50/50 with the AFS. As of the writing of these minutes the Board approved the funds. Also the AFS approved the funds for this project. Rick Gundlach should be doing a PowerPoint presentation at the AFS Casting Congress in April 2018 in Dallas. This would be an update on his progress. Then for the Keith Millis 2018, the manuscript would be released in its official written form. Also the final written manuscript would be released in the AFS Transactions in DIS Research Project #55-S Continuation - Jim Csonka, Jeremy Lipshaw & John Keough (Joyworks)

2 The Voting Body did vote on this project and the results were 15 Yes votes and 6 No votes. There were 4 non-responses. This proposal will be delivered to the Board for funding. As of the writing of these minutes the Board did approve the funding for fiscal 2017/18. Atom Probe Tomography Study of Magnesium in Ductile Iron - Jingjing Qing - Missouri University of Science & Technology Please see the attached updated report from Jingjing. Solid Solution Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron (SSFDI) Effects and Limitations of Residual Alloying Elements by Julia Scruton, Dr. Joseph Licavoli, & Dr. Paul Sanders from Michigan Technology University. After a brief discussion, this project was received in less than 30 days and there are not enough funds for the upcoming fiscal year. The Chairman Brandon Reneau recommended that this stay on the docket for now. There is not much information on this subject so research on this subject is justified. We need to support our graduate students. This project should be voted on at the next meeting. Can we split this into two separate fiscal years? This will fall under the Properties Sub-Committee. Effects of Niobium and Vanadium on the Wear Resistance of Carbidic Austempered Ductile Iron by Dr. Maria Perez of the Institute of Technology in Saltillo, Mexico. The group needs to review at the October Meeting. 6. Ongoing projects a) Process Subcommittee (Brian Johnson) - Image Analysis proposal for Nodularity to ASTM Sub-Committee Dotson made the samples as reported in the last Research Meeting. They were able to produce from 50% nodularity to 100% nodularity. The nodularity coupons have been sent to Matt Meyer at Kohler and Brian Johnson has the test bars and chemistry coupons. Matt Meyer is arranging to have 25 images done on each of the 8 samples. This will be around 200 images. Matt Meyer is submitting the cost to the AFS and the 5R Research Committee. Once done they can be submitted to the ASTM as part of the ILS. After everything is done, it will likely take until January 2018 for the ASTM ILS studies to be completed. Test bars and chemistries samples will be retained by Brian Johnson at Hickman, Williams & Company. - ISO Image Analysis Nothing to report b) Properties Subcommittee (Anhua Yu for John McGoldrick) Since the chair and vice chair were unable to attend, Rob Logan ran the sub-committee meeting. The group had a lengthy discussion on the use of borings in the melt area.

3 The group agreed that they should do a survey of the DIS Membership on the use of borings. Rob Logan is to get in touch with Anhua Yu about the survey of the membership. This is the last meeting for John McGoldrick as the Chairman of this sub- committee. The Research Committee wishes to THANK John McGoldrick for his service as Chairman for the last 3 years. Anhua Yu will take over for the next 3 years. c) Applications Subcommittee (Scott Gledhill) Marc King was in attendance for the sub-committee meeting. Marc King will get with Scott Gledhill on the discussions during this meeting. The group is still looking at a competition on casting design. They want to survey the membership to see if there is any interest in this idea. Vadim Pikhovich asked John Keough to report on the LIFT program. This program is looking at thin walled ductile iron. The first round was very successful as they cast a 2.5 mm wall ductile iron in a green sand mold. Round two will look at alloys and treatment methods. The next round will also look at thin walled 2.5 mm castings in inorganic bonded printed molds. At the ConAg expo the most asked question or inquiry was the welding repair of ductile iron. d) Standards Sub-Committee - (Kathy Hayrynen) ASTM Standards Committee Update A247 - the size table was re-balloted. There was a question about using the ISO numbers instead of the AFS numbers from their reports. The ASTM committee agreed at the last meeting that they would not change. Thanks to Kathy Hayrynen. It looks like A is complete and good for 5 years. A536 - Mandatory change in The plan is to create an appendix that will give you guidelines for how you can expect properties to degrade in heavier sections. 7. Completed Projects comments & questions None at this time. 8. Hot Topics 9. Parking Lot - Analysis of Tensile Fractures in Test Bars and Castings Gundlach - Use of Borings in the Melt -? - Use of Zirconium as a pre-treatment - Brian Johnson/Jim Cree (Projects) - Optimizing Mg Treatment with a Master Alloy Gledhill

4 - Survey of the committee on problems they are currently experiencing in their production facility s Ongoing Effect July 26, 2010, the Parking Lot of proposals is available on the DIS website. Go to then click on the Members Area, then click on Research Proposals Submitted. (Hot Topics) - Energy Conservation Adams 10. Miscellaneous Jim Wood asked for volunteers to review the DIS Quality Manual. Volunteers to review different chapters are to get in touch with Jim Wood. We are looking for roughly 3 volunteers per chapter. Jim Wood will post the manual and volunteer list on the DIS website and Members area. Bob O'Rourke has agreed to champion the revision of the Quality Manual Nodularity Rating CD - Jim Wood Design with Ductile Iron CD/Book. Rick Gundlach has agreed to take on the project as champion the re-write of the original Rio Tinto CD/Book. Should the DIS/Board put money aside every year for Research Funds? Post due dates on the DIS website for Research Projects Jim Wood & Vadim Pikhovich will look at a PowerPoint Presentation during the Fall 2017 Technical Meeting on the operation of the Research Committee. This should be about a 30 minute presentation. There was a motion by John Keough that the Research Committee Guidelines be reviewed and language added that allows webinars, s, etc. (methods of communication) between physical meetings for Research Project reviews.
