FRAUNHOFER INSTITUTE FOR SURFACE ENGINEERING AND THIN FILMS IST OPTICAL COATINGS

OPTICAL FUNCTIONAL COATINGS AT THE FRAUNHOFER IST The development of optical functional films and the related coating processes are core competencies at the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST. In many industrial applications, e. g. photovoltaics, optoelectronics, displays, precision and consumer optics, laser technology, architectural and automotive glazing as well as information and communication technology, the optical coating of components is the key to implementing product properties such as reflectance, transmission, polarization, scattering, phase or color. Even more, optical coatings can combine several functions such as broadband antireflection with scratch protection and anti-smudge behavior. We offer Coating and materials development Process and system engineering Simulation and modeling Analytics and characterization

COATING AND MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT Different layer properties can be combined to achieve the product specifications. The functional coatings can be adapted to various rigid and flexible substrates such as glass, sapphire, polymers and metals even with complex geometries and with a wide range of size and thickness. Precision optical coatings Steep-edge filters for laser-diode wavelength combining Multinotch filters for fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy Narrow bandpass filters for optoelectronics Coatings for laser components, e. g. mirrors and antireflective coatings Gradient filters for imaging and space applications Micro-structured optical filters for optical imaging sensors Active optical coatings Transparent hydrophobic coatings for anti-fingerprint, antismudge surfaces Photocatalytic films for active anti-fingerprint, anti-microbial surfaces, hydrophilic easy-to-clean surfaces Tuneable optical filters for displays

Protective coatings Mechanical resistant films, e.g. scratch resistant anti-reflective coatings Corrosion resistant films, e.g. autoclavable coatings Temperature resistant coatings Architectural and automotive glazing Low-e coatings, e.g. heat-treatable and bendable triple low-e coatings Sun-control coating for passive sun protection Electrochromic glazing for active sun protection and switchable transmission Transparent conductive oxide (TCO) coatings TCOs with adjustable light scattering for photovoltaics n- and p-doped TCOs for optoelectronics Heatable and bendable TCOs for passive anti-ice coating

PROCESS AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING In the field of process development, the institute focuses its activities on sputtering, PECVD and ALD processes. Here, in-situ process control is of particular importance. The Fraunhofer IST provides an extensive range of equipment for the deposition and characterization of high-quality coatings. Process and systems engineering Magnetron sputtering, PECVD, and ALD deposition EOSS Enhanced Optical Sputtering System In-situ monitoring and automated process control (MOCCA + ) Development and optimization of coating sources System engineering with simulation Model-based design and optimization of coating plants Modeling of gas flow and plasma dynamics Film characterization Optical characterization by means of photometry and ellipsometry Micro characterization, e. g. by AFM, FIB, SEM, XRD, EPMA and SIMS Individual application tests, e. g. for photocatalysis, scratch and heat resistance, or adhesion
