2 The immediate benefits for any clients switching to aluminium vessels are as follows. General Aluminium is the first choice of government agencies for boats in the 6 to 20 metre range. Aluminium is used for most small to medium sized commercial fishing boats in the north western US, and used in most crew boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Aluminium has long been accepted as the premier material for fine yachts, both sail and power, and has been the choice for most America's Cup sailboats since It is thus evident, that the Sub Saharan market is ready for the introduction of this technology. Another indication is the global trend to manufacture safe passenger ferry vessels in Aluminium. Consistent World Class Accuracy of Construction As each plate is individually cut on a CNC CAD-CAM Router, working at tolerances of 0.01mm, the accuracy of construction is unmatched, and is consistent from vessel to vessel. Fibreglass boats are generally built from a mould, which, with time, wears resulting in deformed vessels with potential weak points. Weight Co-efficient Aluminium has a higher strength to weight ratio than most affordable boat building materials; Aluminium boats typically weigh 30 to 40% less than their fibreglass counterparts, and 45 to 55% less than their steel counterparts. Weight savings provide a number of performance bonuses. For example, in any given size and shape of boat, lighter weight means greater speed with the same horsepower, reduced fuel consumption, at the maintenance of the same cruising speeds, or a greater payload - more cargo or more range - all meaningful advantages. Its strength and reduced weight also provides reduced draft in relation to a given payload. Durability Aluminium has great toughness. It will survive impacts, that neither steel nor fibreglass will survive. In such cases the steel or fibreglass will rupture, while aluminium will merely dent, due to its superior elasticity. Like steel, aluminium has considerable ductility, i.e. the ability to withstand permanent deformation without rupture. It has one-third the modulus of elasticity of steel, thus it absorbs the energy of any impact over a greater distance than steel. Stress levels therefore are considerably less than would be the case in steel. The hull, deck and keel of an aluminium boat are all one welded structure, with no joints and no leaks and can be easily repaired by welding into place preformed segments. Value Market intelligence shows that Aluminium fleet boats maintain their value as well as their fibreglass counterparts, and has better value retention than steel. Reparability Aluminium boats are much easier to repair than fibreglass boats, particularly fibreglass boats with foam liners. With aluminium, dents can often be pounded out with a hammer, and, if necessary, sections of a plate can be machined out and simply replaced. Flammability Aluminium does not burn. Fibreglass boats contain petroleum-based resins, which burn energetically. Fire retardant resin makes them harder to "light", but nonetheless, the burning is energetic once started. Ease of Customisation Unlike fibreglass boats, aluminium boats are not built from moulds, and thus require minimal bulkheads for structural support, changes in design, modification in the location of bulkheads, size of cabins, etc. and can all be accomplished much more readily than with fibreglass. The ease with which equipment can be relocated, by cutting and welding or drilling and bolting is also advantageous. Corrosion Resistance The salt water corrosion resistance of 5000 series Aluminium is excellent, and has been demonstrated by the Aluminium Company of America (ALCOA) in a thirty-year test, from the mid 1930's to the mid 1960's, at which time a section of an aluminium hull was retired from its test site in Narragansett Bay because so little was happening to it. Corrosion problems with aluminium boats can usually be traced to either the use of improper alloys, galvanic or electrolytic corrosion, all of which may be easily eliminated through proper material selection, proper wiring, bonding and isolation procedures. It also requires less maintenance than a GRP or Steel vessel, with Osmosis and Oxidation being a reduced risk with a longer and more productive lifespan. On site Construction We fabricate to the following standards BS8118, as well as ASME9. Aluminium also allows for the frames and shell plating of a vessel, to be pre-cut and shipped to any destination for final assembly. This would be critical where logistics do not allow for a complete vessel to be transported to its final destination.
