2 Finishes for almost every application OBO offers a wide range of finishes for a wide range of materials that can be used on its product solutions. The function of these finishes ranges from corrosion protection galvanised finishes are an example all the way to decorative powder coating. We have gathered together all the different kinds of finish in this Compendium. It contains technical descriptions of their properties, as well as information about the kind of places they can be used. Actual photographs of each finish present as accurate a picture of them as possible. Please note that for technical reasons, the colours and gloss levels may come out slightly differently in print. 5 The ideal coating Powder coatings New powder coating system enables even more diverse colours, surface textures and processing standards OBO s ultra-modern powder coating system has put an end to long periods of waiting after surface treatment. Powder lacquers harden immediately after baking, and parts can be processed. 3

7 New application technique This system can accommodate products up to six metres long, such as cable ladders. In the first stage, pretreatment, almost any kind of metal (apart from coloured sheeting such as brass or copper) is treated using water and chemical additives. Parts are then put in the dryer, before being given a powder lacquer coating by means of an electrostatic process in the powder cabin. This new application technique allows more powder types to be used, enabling products to be treated on their surfaces to withstand extremely rough conditions. The choice of surface textures is also diverse; rough, medium-rough and smooth surfaces are all available. Fast and eco-friendly Thanks to our new quick-change cabin, colours can be changed in just ten minutes instead of two hours. This technology, and the solvent-free paints used, is also much more ecofriendly than conventional types of paint. Used water from the preparation system is completely recycled in a vacuum evaporator and used again. Powder coatings 5

21 Metallic powder coatings Powder coatings Metallic coatings stand out on account of their brilliant finish, visual depth and variations in colour, depending on which angle you look at them from. 25 Surface textures Powder coatings Rough, medium-rough or smooth numerous effects can be achieved using powder lacquers. They help you to adapt product finishes into the environments in which you wish to use them. 23

26 Powder coatings Antibacterial finishes Unique and safe. A specially developed material added to the powder lacquer destroys harmful bacteria. The effect of this additive remains in the powder lacquer for many years, making the coated surface permanently antibacterial. This material is especially useful on products such as ducting installed in medical and food industry areas. 24

30 Powder coatings Polyurethane powder lacquer Polyurethane powder lacquers offer outstanding resistance to weather and chemicals. That makes them perfect for coating indoor and outdoor elements. Because they are highly resistant to scratching and also very elastic, these paints are the ideal coating for use in agriculture and shipbuilding, as they can stand up to lots of rough treatment. 28

31 Powder coatings for special corrosion protection requirements Powder coatings Epoxy-polyester powder lacquer Indoors and out, epoxy-polyester powder lacquers combine high levels of protection with dependable quality and elegant looks. Superb physical properties and high flexibility indoors mean there are many ways you can use them in upmarket applications. Out of doors, these paints provide lasting protection against environmental influences, without losing colour or gloss. 29

32 Transfer process Discover unimagined design possibilities A special transfer process enables us to apply a range of stunning decorative finishes. This process can be used on Rapid 80 GS (steel) as well as Rapid 45 and Rapid 80 GA (aluminium) device installation trunking. The unique designs are especially effective on ISS service poles. The patterns are stable under light, and impact-resistant, meaning they last longer than standard powder lacquers. This allows you to create individual wall designs with no limits to your imagination. 30

36 Galvanised finishes Special coating thicknesses OBO offers galvanised finishes in a range of special coating thicknesses for specific requirements. Thicker layers of zinc can be applied, for example, to cable trays, cable ladders, brackets and suspended supports in power stations. These special coatings can also protect components used in wind power equipment, which is especially vulnerable if installed in saline environments near to the sea. 34

OBO cable support, wiring routing and underfloor systems are made of high-grade sheet steel and steel wire, and can be supplied in a variety of finishes. Different methods of treatment and coating provide just the corrosion protection you need, tailored to the use you have in mind. 35

38 Galvanised finishes At its Menden facilities, OBO operates one of Europe s most advanced hot galvanising plants. The zinc bath at the plant is 7.5 metres long, 3.5 metres deep and 1.4 metres wide, and contains up to 260 tons of zinc. The latest filter technologies and heat exchangers ensure that the production process uses resources such as gas, electricity, zinc and acid sustainably. 36

39 Welcome to one of Europe s most advanced galvanising plants Galvanised finishes Hot galvanising means applying a metallic zinc coating to iron or steel. Individual parts, such as those used for electrical cable trays, are immersed in molten zinc at 450 degrees Celsius. A resistant alloy forms which provides protection against corrosion. OBO s unique way of treating galvanised goods, called passivation, prevents the formation of white rust. 37

41 Appropriate corrosion protection Galvanised finishes Corrosiveness categories Corrosion can bring about significant losses, and can even cause technical systems to break down. Preventing and reducing corrosion is therefore an important part of protecting steel components. The DIN EN ISO standard carefully defines corrosiveness categories. It divides atmospheric ambient conditions into a total of six different categories. The following parameters determine the level of corrosion and the speed at which it happens: Relative humidity The risk of condensation The concentration of impurities that cause corrosion Special requirements How long a cable routing system lasts depends upon the environment in which it is situated. If a cable support system is installed outdoors, then the best possible materials and the maximum protection against corrosion are required. This becomes especially challenging in aggressive atmospheres, such as those found in the chemical and petrochemical industries. Systems are also permanently under attack in extreme weather conditions and near to the sea. It is very important to know the environmental influences involved when selecting the materials and surface finishes used. 39

49 Welding primers Welding primers Cable ladders used in shipbuilding must stand up to the toughest conditions. OBO cable ladders are used on giant cruising vessels that ply the oceans of the world. Welding primers can be used to fulfil special requirements on board, since they can be welded without producing harmful substances. 47

50 Stainless steel finishes Hygienic aspects Stainless steel has alongside high-grade plastics proven itself in many areas in which hygiene is of central importance. This nontasting material is resistant even to the most abrasive of chemical cleaning agents. OBO is one of the leading manufacturers of high-grade stainless steel systems in the electrical industry. 48

55 Decorative finishes Metallic effects Decorative metal finishes Materials such as anodised aluminium and brass can be used to achieve a number of colourful effects. Anodising refers to the electrical oxidation of aluminium. This creates an extremely hard and scratch-resistant surface which offers protection against corrosion. The material s metallic appearance is preserved. An anodised layer can be coloured, and these colours are then highly resistant to abrasion and chemical influences. The different shades of brass are dependent on the level of copper in the material. They are often golden in colour, but can also be anything from brown to reddish, or from light yellow to almost white-yellow. 53

57 Plastic finishes Plastic finishes Types of plastic Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) Polycarbonate / acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS) OBO uses high-grade plastics with the best possible properties. PVC can withstand high and low temperatures, as well as ultraviolet light, different chemicals and a lot of physical wear and tear. Halogenfree plastics also have excellent fire protection properties as they do not produce corrosive fumes. 55
