Hwever, there are certain safety precautins that shuld be taken when handling fast, lud, ht, crrsive and therwise dangerus things. In this manual, yu will find general infrmatin abut staying safe in a fablab, including cmmn accidents and dangers t watch ut fr, as well as sme basic first-respnse infrmatin.

NOISE EXPOSURE Milling machines, dust cllectrs and ther machines fund in the fablab can be really lud. If yu have t shut t a clleague wh is less than 2 meters away, r if yu hear ringing in yur ears/ experience temprary hearing lss after leaving the fablab, yu are experiencing preventable hearing damage. Sund insulatin in the fablab (like giving machines rubber feet, putting machines in separate spaces) is a preferred slutin. Hwever, smetimes it is unavidable t be in the same space as a lud machine. In that case, yu shuld wear ear prtectin-- ear muffs r ear plugs. SAFETY GLASSES A brken bit can fly ff the bed as fast as a bullet! When using milling machines, chemicals, sldering irns and the like, ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. Even if yu are wearing safety glasses, keep in mind they are nt indestructible, nr d they fully seal yur eye scket frm the

utside. Yu shuld avid things like being eye-level with a spinning bit r flying sparks. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Particles and fumes can disrupt ur respiratry system, with particles getting ldged in ur lungs r fumes causing allergic reactins. T keep the air quality at acceptable levels in fablabs, precautins can be taken t initially cntain air cntaminants, and persnal prtectin devices (air-purifying respiratrs) can we wrn t prtect frm air cntaminates that cannt be immediately remved. Nte that nt all air-purifying respiratrs prtect frm bth fumes and particles- - mst nly prtect frm particles. Fr the ShpBt and Mdela, the amunt f dust generated can be cntained with an enclsure arund the machine, as well as a vacuum system. Different types f respiratrs Sme types f dust are wrse than thers-- fiberglass and carbn fiber dust can cause lng-term respiratry damage. Nte that althugh the circuit bards that we have t mill in fablabs d nt have fiberglass in them like ther circuit bards, but they are still and epxybased plastic and the dust created frm milling them is txic. All epxy glues and casting resins shuld cme with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) that alerts yu t the dangers f wrking with that substance. Sme plastics nly require basic ventilatin, thers require fully ventilated hds. Cnstant expsure t epxies and urethanes leads t sensitizatin and eventually acute allergic reactins, s be aware when MSDSs warn abut 'prlnged expsure'. Fr laser cutting plymers, here is a gd guide: Identificatin f Plymers (by David A. Katz)

3D printing based n heated thermplastic extrusin and depsitin (PLA r ABS) has been fund t increase the ultrafine particle (UFP) cncentratins (nan particles) by a factr 1 t 4 fr PLA (2 printers perating) and 9 t 56 fr a setting with 2 PLA printers and 3 ABS printers in the same rm ( cmpared t the base rate with n printers perating. SKIN PROTECTION Yu never knw hw a chemical might react with yur bdy. Be careful! When dealing with chemical substances, always wear glves. Glues and casting resins are nt nly difficult t wash ff, they cntain mlecules that can clsely mimic human hrmnes and disrupt yur endcrine signaling system. These prblems may nly becme apparent years later, r even manifest in yur ffspring. If yu get chemicals n any ther part f yur bdy, wash immediately accrding the the instructins in the material safety data sheet (MSDS). Similarly, certain types f dust can be irritants t yur skin, and apprpriate prtectin shuld be wrn when sanding r therwise dealing with dust. HOT THINGS ARE HOT There are many ht things in fablabs-- sldering irns, vens, heat guns. When smene burns themselves, cl the affected skin AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. If the heat has t dissipate int the surrunding flesh, it will ck mre f the bdy.

HOT THINGS LEAD TO FIRES On putting ut small fires in fablabs: there are fire extinguishers available especially fr electrnics. These have nn-cnductive extinguishing substances, s that after the fire is ut, yu can still use electrical equipment that is undamaged. Sldering irns and vens: Turn ff sldering irns and vens if yu leave! Besides being a fire hazard, leaving the sldering irn n with n slder n the tip will xidize the tip and make it harder t slder with in the future. LASER CUTTER Never leave the laser cutter while it is running. If yu must be in anther rm, make a vide-link t mnitr the bed. Once fires start, they can quickly g ut f cntrl. If yur material is burning t much in the laser cutter, try increasing the speed and/r lwering the pwer. If yu cannt cut all the way thrugh at a higher speed, try increasing the PPI r cutting in tw passes. It is very very easy t start a fire in the laser cutter

SHOPBOT On the ShpBt fires can start due t dull end-mills r t-high spindle speeds. Make sure yur end-mills are sharp and yur cuts are nt leaving behind charred r disclred edges. Frictin can als be reduced by reducing the cutting depth (increasing the number f passes) r reducing the number f cutting flutes n the end-mill (i.e. a 2-flute end mill instead f a 4-flute). Once a fire starts n the ShpBt bed, it quickly jumps t the dust cllectr due t embers being vacuumed up. Sawdust is extremely flammable and can make a big fireball ut f yur fablab. BAD! Never leave the ShpBt while it is running fr these reasns. Other: Electrical fires due t verlading extensin crds (daisy-chaining) r damaged wires can ccur even when yu are nt actively using anything in yur lab. Make sure yur machines are plugged int utlets that are rated fr the pwer cnsumptin f yur machine. Keep all machines n surge prtectrs t make sure they are nt damaged in lightening strms r ther electrical crazines Even with the vinylcutter, nly ne persn at a time! GENERAL SAFETY Many accidents ccur because tw peple are using the same machine at the same time. D nt put yur hands near the tl path unless yu are sure that the machine is nt ging t mve! THROWING THINGS AWAY IN A FAB LAB: Many casting resins, paints, batteries and ther chemicals shuld be thrwn away as special chemical trash. Als electrnics are ften cnsidered dangerus trash.
