4 China Steel Yearbook 2010 China steel industry in Iron and steel production in Output growth increased sharply Although the global output of crude steel decreased due to the influence of the economic crisis in 2009 the Chinese economy still grew by 8.7% because of the added investment by government. This investment, used mainly for infrastructural construction, promoted demand for steel products, therefore the output of steel in China in 2009 increased greatly when compared with that of According to National Bureau of Statistics fi gures, China's crude steel output in 2009 was million tonnes, an increase of 13.5% over the previous year. The output of fi nished steel products (including reprocessing SAMPLE products) in 2009 was million tonnes with an annual growth rate of 15.9%. The output of pig iron in 2009 was million tonnes, with an annual growth rate of 15.9%. An increase in the second half of the year was the China steel industry.indd :35:43

5 China steel industry in 2009 main reason for a rise in output in The output of crude steel in the first half was million tonnes, an increase of 1.2% year-on-year. Growth in output increased by over 10% from July onwards. The faster growth was due not only to an actual increase in output, but also to decreased output in the second half of The output in August of million tonnes was the highest monthly output ever recorded, but the highest daily output of 1.69 million tonnes was recorded in September which represents an annualised output of 617 million tonnes. The output of crude steel in the four quarters was million tonnes, million tonnes, million tonnes and million tonnes respectively, with growth rates of 1.4% 1.1%, 20.5% and 34.9% respectively. 7 China steel industry in 2009 By province, a crude steel output of over 100 million tonnes in 2009 was seen only in Hebei province whose output of million tonnes accounted for 23.84% of national output and which showed an increase of 0.68 per cent over the previous year. There were 18 provinces over 10 million tonnes in 2009, three more (Yunnan, Zhejiang and Guangxi) than in 2008, with a total crude steel output of million tonnes accounting for 90.86% of national output. There were 3 provinces over 40 million tonnes in 2009, Jiangsu, Shandong and Liaoning, with an output of 54.9 million tonnes, million tonnes and million tonnes respectively and accounting for 9.67%,8.55% and 8.42% of national SAMPLE output respectively. The output of Hebei, Jiangsu, Shandong and Liaoning accounts for 50.48% of national output. In 2009, the additional output of million tonnes of crude steel came mainly from Hebei with a weighting of China steel industry.indd :35:50
