WELCOME H.J.Hansen Recycling Industry Ltd. Recycling ferrous and non-ferrous metals Disposition 1. Who is H.J.Hansen? 2. What has H.J.Hansen done in terms of GHG and climate? 3. Metal recycling and climate in general and what are the potentials? 4. What can we do to promote more metal recycling?

H.J.Hansen s climate policy Climate change is one of the major challenges facing society in modern times. As Denmark's leading recycler of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap H.J.Hansen Recycling Ltd. wishes to help reduce GHG emissions to the atmosphere. Our focus will be: Continued focus on minimizing electricity use and diesel consumption compared to the output volume. and Helping to promote recycling in general, since it has shown that recycling of ferrous and non-ferrous metals have high GHG saving potential compared to production of ferrous and non-ferrous metals produced from virgin ore. H.J.Hansen will publish the results obtained in GHG inventories at appropriate intervals. GHG from H.J.Hansen s operations Certified GHG inventory August 09 First Danish recycler Total GHG emission: 17,563 tonnes CO 2 e Product segment kg CO2e pr. ton Ferrous 11 Non-ferrous 13 Shredder 39

GHG from H.J.Hansen s operations Where are the GHG emissions??? Transport emissions: Dependent on distance and method Emissions from melting: Dependent on metal and method Total emissions must be calculated using isolated business cases Need for third party review to ensure consistency

Example ferrous shipped by deep sea carrier to Turkey 13 kg CO2e/ton 32 kg CO2e/ton 598 kg CO2e/ton The supplier can use the carbon certificate as scope 3 emission GHG savings 1,1 ton CO2e/ton steel 3,0 ton CO2e/ton stainless 11 ton CO2e/ton aluminum 18 ton CO2e/ton copper avoided

What can we do to promote metal recycling? Collection Refinement Transport Re-melting Consumer What can we do to promote metal recycling? - Collection Make it easier to discard metal waste Collect scrap at the households and save CO2-emissions. Focus on forgotten sources ELVs contain approx kgs of wiring (50% copper)

What can we do to promote metal recycling? - Refinement & transport (I) Does REACH promote recycling? End-of-Waste Pro: Out of waste legislation Con: Into REACH legislation Requires registration as substance or preperation Does change of legal framework promote recycling? Should be classified as ore Exception from REACH, Annex V subsection 7 What can we do to promote metal recycling? - Refinement & transport (II)

What can we do to promote metal recycling? -Consumer Give consumers the tools to make a GHG friendly choice. Differentiate between products based on ore and products based on recycled material. Make me want to choose that one There is no waste only resources

One More Time A debate anthology which focuses on recycling in a climate perspective. Six contributors write about: How can we as consumers contribute in relation to recycling and climate change? What will recycling look like in the future? What are the potentials and why is it so important? Foreword by Danish Minister for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009, Connie Hedegaard Available at End Rasmus Olsen, M.Sc. Env. Eng. Phone: Mail: rao@hjhansen.dk Web:
