2 01 Looking ahead Bangladesh is a developing country and widely known as an EMERGING TIGER. The Vision 21 aims at Bangladesh becoming a middle-income country by the year Development of a country relates to its infrastructural development and infrastructural development depends on construction material. Ribbed Bar (Rod) is one of the main construction materials. 3 02 SS TIGER 500W, a product of SS Steel is the new generation high strength ribbed reinforcement bar. It is different from ordinary bars in its method of manufacturing and consequently, in its combination of properties. These properties ensure that SS Steel provides the strongest core to a structure. SS Steel makes structural objectives possible maintaining highest standard. With SS Steel re-bar, inside core strength is guaranteed.

4 03 Re-bars are specified and assessed from the functional point of view over 2 main dimensions: Mechanical properties and Chemical properties. The desired mechanical properties e.g. strength, ductility, elongation, ability to bend, TS/YS Ratio, etc., are achieved through precise mix of chemistry in the process of billet making and controlling rolling parameters. To ensure highest quality end product, SS Steel was the first steel mill in Bangladesh to commission a billet making plant made in Europe that was installed and commissioned by Italian engineers. As part of the chemistry, a re-bar usually contains various harmful impurities such as Sulphur (S), Phosphorus (P), Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr) and Copper (Cu); in varying levels which can reduce the strength of steel in extreme conditions. Therefore lowering the content makes the steel better.

5 04 CHEMICAL PROPERTIES SS TIGER 500W is produced as per BDS ISO 6935:2 2006, its carbon levels are maintained to surpass required standard, quality and specification that are expected, which results in its excellent ductility, high bendability, better corrosion resistance and superior weldability. Other unwanted impurities (like Sulphur and Phosphorus) that impair the overall longevity of re-bars inside constructions are also maintained at much lower than specifications in SS TIGER 500W. 6 05 MECHANICAL PROPERTIES SS TIGER 500W s exclusive method of manufacturing creates a combination of strength and ductility that exceeds the minimum limit specified in the standard BDS. In the yield strength for SS TIGER 500W, though the standard specifies a minimum of 500 N/mm2, designers use this value for design; the typical values are around 550 N/mm2. For the same product, the typical value of ductility as measured by elongation is near by 16% minimum as against the standard value of 14% minimum. Undoubtedly, TS/YS ratio and percentage of elongation are important properties in a re-bar that reflects the ability to handle the pressure of earthquakes. Higher this values, the better. 8 07 BENDABILITY The special microstructure of SS TIGER 500W results in a re-bar with excellent bendability. The bar can be bent easily and sharply. SS TIGER 500W can bend to the exact angle required unlike ordinary re-bars as desired by the design around mandrels and is much smaller in diameter than what is specified in BDS ISO 6935: This has obvious advantages for construction purpose and it makes unconventional structures come to life. Easy to manipulate re-bars can reduce labor hours thus reducing cost and increasing efficiency of construction.

9 08 Weldability Due to its low carbon content SS TIGER 500W Bars have better weldability which is superior to ordinary re-bars. It can be butt-welded or lap-welded using ordinary retile coated electrodes of matching strength. In manual welding, no pre-warming or post-welding treatment is necessary. Quick and easy welding reduces construction time and reduces labor errors, which has obvious benefits for the builder. Corrosion Resistant Characteristics SS TIGER 500W is produced by TMT technology and not by cold twisting. Therefore, there is proportional residual stress in the bar, which results in superior corrosion resistant characteristics compared to traditional cold twisted bars. On account of its composite and uniform microstructure, SS TIGER 500W has better corrosion resistant properties than other TMT bars, while being embedded inside concrete. Corrosion weakens a structure from the inside and reduces its longevity. Corrosion resistant steel ensures long life of a structure that also needs little structural maintenance over the years. As a result, corrosion resistant characteristic of SS TIGER 500W is a defining factor in establishing its superiority over other brands.

10 09 Superior Rib Pattern Although steel and concrete are two different materials, they still have to behave as a single unit in a reinforced structure. It can happen only when the concrete holds the steel re-bar to form the strongest bond through the unique rib pattern of the re-bar. SS TIGER 500W has a rib pattern in terms of greater rib depth and closer rib spacing. Its ribs are made using computer controlled CNC notch cutting machines. Rib patterns on the re-bar surface provide quality bonding with cement only when they are produced through CNC machine rolls. This ensures uniform rib pattern for 100% of the re-bars, which allows evenly strong bonding with concrete for the whole structure. This is in contrast to the ordinary re-bars, where ribs are cut manually which always leaves scope for non-uniform rib pattern and thereby, non-uniform and weaker bonding throughout the structure. Due to uniformity and critically designed ribs, fatigue strength of SS TIGER 500W is much superior to ordinary re-bars. Rib patterns on the re-bar surface can give quality bonding with cement only if they are produced through CNC machined rolls. 11 10 Characteristics of SS Tiger 500W SS TIGER 500W are high strength re-bars with better elongation properties implying that you can economize steel consumption without sacrificing safety. SS TIGER 500W has more superior weldability than conventional deformed bars due to its low carbon content it can be built-welded or lap-welded using ordinary electrodes. SS TIGER 500W rib patterns on the re-bar surface can give quality bonding with concrete. Lower %S, %P, %Cr and % Cu content makes the re-bars more durable and weather resistant. Due to its exclusive combination of strength and ductility, SS TIGER 500W can adequately support a seismic design with the pressure of earthquakes. SS TIGER 500W maintain the standard Ratio (UTS / YS). Extraordinary microstructure of SS TIGER 500W results in the re-bar s excellent bendability. 12 11 Seismic Resistant Properties Several studies were conducted on concrete beam column joints reinforced with SS TIGER 500W to evaluate its performance as would be encountered during earthquake. The energy dissipation was found to be almost same for each cycle, indicating uniformly maintained ductility throughout the repeated stress cycles. The tests revealed superior seismic resistant properties for SS TIGER 500W. The seismic resistant property facilitates minimum damage to the structure and hence minimizes casualties caused due to earthquakes. SS TIGER 500W re-bars demonstrate superiority by providing safe and durable structures to the end user in this regard. Ultimate Tensile Strength / Yield Strength ratio and % of Elongation are important properties in a re-bar that reflect the ability to handle the pressure of earthquakes.
