1 Thai Corrosion of Metals and Materials Association, Thailand Concrete Association and Vector Corrosion Technology in collaboration with National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC) Organize a Special Lecture on Corrosion Prevention, Corrosion Control and Cathodic Protection of Reinforced Concrete Structure and Corrosion Evaluation and Mitigation of Post-Tensioned Tendons Date: 23 rd April 2013 Venue: Lecture 2, Sirindhorn Science Home, Thailand Science Park, Pathumthani

2 ABSTRACT Corrosion of steel reinforcement occurs in reinforced concrete structures and results in significant cost of repairs if left unattended. In this seminar, an overview of the corrosion process is presented. Corrosion protection of existing concrete structures as well as corrosion design and mitigation in new structures will be discussed. Corrosion of post-tensioned tendon leading to wire/tendon break and structure collapse is a serious problem for operator and owners. Many concrete corrosion protection techniques are not applicable to post-tensioned tendons because tendons are encased in sheathings. Innovative evaluation technologies and corrosion mitigation technologies are presented in this seminar. Parties interested in the field of structural engineering and corrosion engineering will benefit tremendously from this lecture. This presentation will cover the following topics: Reinforced concrete corrosion evaluation and mitigation 1) Corrosion Basics & Investigation Understanding the primary causes and the corrosion process and corrosion assessment 2) Repair alternatives-localized protection or distributed-global systems depending on age and condition of structure and expected service life 3) Levels of corrosion protection needed depending on the stage of corrosion activity 4) Corrosion mitigation systems and technologies available Post-tensioned tendon corrosion evaluation and mitigation 1) Post-tensioning corrosion basics & investigation Understanding the primary causes and the corrosion process and corrosion assessment 2) Post-tensioning corrosion mitigation systems and technologies available The seminar will be interactive and many case studies will be presented. Participants will have time for Questions & Answer to discuss local issues and projects. The presentation will be of interest to owners, operators, authorities, consultants and specialist contractors who deal with corrosion prevention, protection and repairs of concrete structures as well as steel structures.

3 SPEAKER Liao Haixue is a professional engineer from Ontario. He is a qualified presenter for USA National Council of Structural Engineers Associations, certified continuing education program, Evaluation, Repair, Protection and Strengthening of Existing Concrete Structures. He is working as the Asia Business Development Manager for Vector Corrosion Technologies. He is also working as Segment Manager, Post-Tensioning and Strengthening for Vector Group, involving in post-tensioning evaluation and rehabilitation. He is also a NACE certified cathodic protection specialist with extensive experience in reinforced concrete corrosion evaluation, mitigation and protection. He is also associated with PTI (Post-tensioning Institute) and ASBI (American Segmental Bridge Institute) with 20 year experience in posttensioning installation, evaluation and rehabilitation.
