1 PERSONAL DETAILS CURRICULUM VITAE OF M.D. MATHEW Name Designation-1 Institution Designation-2 Institution Address (residence) Dr.M.D.Mathew Scientific Officer H+ (Joint Secretary rank) Head, Mechanical Metallurgy Division Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research Department of Atomic Energy, Kalpakkam Tamil Nadu, , INDIA Associate Professor Homi Bhabha National Institute, Kalpakkam 18 Bhairavi, Anupuram Township Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, INDIA Date of birth May 31, 1954 Tel. No. (office) Tel. No. (residence) ; Address ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS (Degree, Subject, University) Ph.D. M.B.A. A.M.I.E. M.Sc. B.Sc. Physics-Metallurgy Interdisciplinary, University of Madras, Chennai General Management, Anna University, Chennai Metallurgy, Institution of Engineers India Physics, University of Kerala, Trivandrum Physics, University of Kerala, Trivandrum EXPERIENCE i. Research & Development: Internationally recognized for expertise in the field of mechanical properties of materials with more than 30 years of research experience in advanced fields of metallurgical engineering at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR). IGCAR is a world-class nuclear research institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. It is engaged in mission oriented research in the area of fast reactor technology. The broad areas of expertise include all aspects of mechanical behavior of materials, and development of engineering materials for high temperature applications in nuclear fission and fusion reactors, and 1

2 thermal power plants, as well as microstructure mechanical properties correlation using advanced optical and electron-optical instruments. The specific fields of expertise include Mechanical properties of materials Creep Low cycle fatigue High cycle fatigue Thermo-mechanical fatigue Creep-fatigue interaction Creep and fatigue life prediction Remnant life assessment High temperature design Modelling of deformation and damage behaviour Structure property correlation Innovative techniques for evaluation of mechanical properties and structural integrity assessment Materials development for high temperature applications Advanced austenitic stainless steels Ferritic and martensitic steels Nickel base superalloys Oxide dispersion strengthened alloys Nuclear materials Solder materials Welding consumables I have made very important contributions towards understanding the high temperature mechanical behaviour of materials for India s fast reactor programme. Extensive studies have been carried out on the tensile, creep, low cycle fatigue, creep-fatigue interaction and thermo-mechanical fatigue properties of several materials for India s fast reactor programme. The materials include various grades of austenitic stainless steels, alloy steels and their welds. These studies established that the materials selected for the various critical components of the reactors fully met the design requirements. The deformation, damage and fracture mechanisms under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions were studied to give an in-depth understanding of the mechanical properties of these materials and paved the way for the indigenous development of several superior grades of stainless steels, ferritic-martensitic steels and welding consumables. important contributions have been made towards the indigenous development of nuclear grade materials for the fast reactor programme. I was closely associated with the indigenous development of an austenitic stainless steel called alloy D9, a low carbon nitrogen alloyed grade of 316L(N) SS, a low carbon high nitrogen alloyed grade of 316LN SS, an advanced austenitic SS called IFAC-1 SS, type IV cracking resistant grade 91 steel, and oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic and ferritic- 2

3 martensitic steels. Through collaborations, interactions and discussions with the different steel manufacturers, these steels were produced by combining primary melting in AIM or VIM furnace followed by secondary melting through ESR or VAR processes. The billets were hot forged, subjected to appropriate thermomechanical heat treatments and converted into different product forms such as forgings, plates, rods and tubes with close dimensional tolerances and free of defects. ODS steel tubes were produced through powder metallurgical process consisting of ball milling, compaction, extrusion and multiple stages of pilgering with intermediate heat treatments. In addition to alloy development, charatcterisation of properties and generation of design curves for fast reactor applications, I have made major contributions towards indigenously developing the reduced activation ferritic-martensitic steel called INRAFM steel, for the International Experimental Fusion Reactor, ITER. All the mechanical properties were extensively characterized in order to optimise the chemical composition of INRAFM steel. In addition to the work on materials for fast reactors and fusion reactors, I have also been involved in developing and characterizing materials such as 304HCu and alloy 617 for India s Advanced ultra Supercritical (AUSC) power plant programme. I have set up a variety of mechanical testing facilities such as tensile, creep, low cycle fatigue, creep-fatigue, thermomechnaical fatigue, hardness, impact, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and metallographic tools to carry out world class research on mechanical behavior of materials discussed above. Whereas developing improved materials is important, it is equally important to assess structural integrity of existing plants and extending their operating life. Towards this, I have pioneered innovative and material non-invasive testing techniques to evaluate mechanical properties of materials. Impression creep, ball indentation and small punch creep techniques have been developed and these have great significant technological applications for evaluating the mechanical properties of heat affected zone of welds, in assessing structural integrity of components in service and their life extension. ii. Teaching and Guiding Research: Guided more than 20 Master Degree and Ph.D. students in India and abroad; Special lectures delivered at IIT Kanpur. iii. R&D Management: 15 years of in-depth experience; currently leading a large research programme with 25 research scientists in the area of mechanical properties of materials and development of advanced engineering materials for nuclear fission, nuclear fusion and advanced supercritical thermal power plant applications. iv. Project Management: Established world class R&D facilities for carrying out advanced research on all aspects of mechanical properties of materials and structure-property correlations. State-ofthe-art creep laboratories, biaxial creep testing system, tensile testing facilities, low cycle, high cycle and thermomechanical fatigue testing facilities, environmental laboratory for carrying out creep and fatigue studies in liquid sodium environment, advanced structural integrity assessment laboratories, and integrated facility for studying fusion reactor materials have been established. 3
