4 Item Number: 91 Description: SOM ballot item to maintain equivalency to ASTM A123/A123M for AASHTO M111M/M111 Decisions: Affirmative: 44 of 53 Negative: 2 of 53 No Vote: 6 of 53 Agency (Individual Name) Virginia Department of Transportation (Charles A. Babish) (andy.babish@vdot.virginia.gov) Negative If the goal was to maintain equivalency with ASTM A123, this is not the case. Table 1 in ASTM A123 is different than Table 1 in AASHTO M111. Agree with the intent, but the intent is not met. Recommendation Negative was withdrawn by Bill Bailey (VA) pending a change back to the original value of 75 for the steel thickness ¼. Recommend changing back to 75 for steel thickness ¼ since it appears the increase from 75 to 80 was in error and not in line with the revision to the ASTM A123 standard. New York State Department of Transportation (Robert A Burnett) (bburnett@dot.state.ny.us) Negative NYSDOT would like to see more data on the impact that reducing the coating thicknesses has on service life before approving this change. The rationale included data from only one manufacturer. Negative was withdrawn by Bob Burnett (NY). Rhode Island Department of Transportation (Mark E Felag) (mark.felag@dot.ri.gov) Title year should be 14, not 13. Notes should be referenced in the standard. Recommend changing designation to M Kansas Department of Transportation (Richard E Kreider) (richard.kreider@ksdot.org) Is there a reason that table 1 on page 15 of 27 has the Pipe and Tubing at 6.4 changed to 80, but the table on page 26 of 27 doesn't show the change? Recommend changing back to 75. (See recommendation regarding negative from VA.) Washington State Department of Transportation (Kurt R Williams) (willikr@wsdot.wa.gov) This Ballot revision references ASTM A , but the latest version of the ASTM is ASTM A Recommend consideration be given in the future to revises AASHTO M 111 to the 2013 version of ASTM A 123. ASTM A separates plate from structural shapes and adds a new steel thickness range of >5/8 inches. Recommend considering a future revision of M 111 to revise to the new A NY DOT Negative withdrawn. One editorial change was made to fix an error as pointed out by (VA) and to update the designation as pointed out by (RI). These changes will be considered editorial, and will be included in the next publication. Other editorial revisions will be made to stay current with ASTM A changes.

5 Lacinak (AASHTO) points out that the recently revised ASTM A has added another column to Table 1 Minimum Average Coating Thickness Grade by Material Category of A 123, and thinks it may be something to consider for the next ballot. There are some issues with the new table in A123 that need to be addressed by ASTM. Henry Lacinak (AASHTO) and Woody Hood (MD) will contact ASTM to resolve the discrepancies and make the appropriate changes to M111M/M111. Since this tech section will not be meeting at the annual SOM meeting, it is suggested that the revised standard by sent for a tech section ballot in the spring, and if it passes, it should be sent for a full SOM ballot in the fall. A motion is made by (VA) to send M111M/M11 for a full ballot in the fall, pending approval by the tech section ballot in the spring. The motion is seconded by (NH). Motion passes. Action Items: Editorial changes will be made in M111M/M111 in release for 2014 volume (these changes will be current with A123-12) Make changes to update M111M/M111 with A and send to technical section ballot followed by full fall 2014 SOM ballot. (b) 2013 TS Ballots Reconfirmation of M , Gray Iron Castings (8 affirmative / 0 negative / 1 no vote) No comments received V. New Business A) Reconfirmation ballot needed for: M 232M / M , Zinc Coating (Hot-Dip) on Iron and Steel Hardware M , Drainage, Sewer, Utility, and Related Castings Action Item: Henry will put together a reconfirmation ballot.
