Welding Unit 2 La Plata County Guided Project
Second Year Welding Guidelines The 4-h wielding project is intended to give the 4-H members the fundamental background in the major aspects of welding. The emphasis is for each member to master hand manipulative skills, develop successful welding techniques and to also gain an understanding of the equipment and specialized tool being used in the welding field. Each member progresses at his/her own rate as demonstrated by his/her ability and application. It is inherent in this type on instruction that a great deal of emphasis is put on safety, individual instruction, demonstration and application. Project Objectives: 1. To understand the proper care and maintenance of welding equipment and accessories. 2. To obtain a basic knowledge of the correct practices and usages of equipment and accessories. 3. To acquire knowledge of the techniques involved in arc and gas welding and oxygen cutting. Techniques to be taught: 1. Review first year- run some welds to get use to welding again 2. Start working with multiple pass fillet welding. 3. Start out- of- position welding single beads 4. Flame cutting and fitting for project. 5. Project is to be a plan or blueprint project. Not one of your own. What to Turn in: Completed record book and unit questions (please make sure this is in a binder) Butt (pg 36 Arcs & sparks), T (pg 38 Arcs & sparks) and V- Weld Coupon: Please Show 1. Vertical 2. Horizontal 3. Overhead Project: Unit 2 will need to have a plan/blueprint that is not their own (we want you to be able to read the plans or blueprints). They may add creativity by adding to the main project. Example: You want to build a stepping stool. The blue prints have the base, steps and legs, but you want to add a rail and platform to place item you get of the shelf. Coupon and Project must be welded with the same process (Example: if you weld our coupons with a Mig you MUST weld your project with a Mig) Welds are NOT to be ground off you may wire brush and painted Make sure all items have your name and club name on them.
Unit Two Question Sheet (Turn in with your record book after your plan sheet) 1. What is Welding? A. Welding is a manufacturing process. B. Welding is a metals fabrication trade. C. Welding is a metal joining process by the use of heat. Welding is a job skill. D. Welding can not be defined. 2. How many types of welding (welding process) are there? A. Over 150 B. 25 to 50 C. Over 50 D. 5 to What is most important in a welding environment? A. Shop Safety B. Personal Safety C. Industrial Safety D. All of the above 4. Typical occupational hazards for welders may be? A. Infra- red and ultra- violet radiation B. Toxic fumes and poisonous gases C. Electrical shock, explosion 5. Why should you never look at an eclectic arc without a dark lens and shield? 6. Why are safety glasses important when cutting with a torch, chipping slag, grinding, etc. 7. Why should you were welding gloves and a long sleeve shirt? 8. What is the difference between an AC and DC current? 9. What precautions must be taken in storing electrodes? 10. What are some of the items to be checked before proceeding to weld? 11. How is the size of a welding machine rated?
12. Why should the holder never be placed on the work bench while the current is on? 13. What should be done if the electrode welds fast to the plate? 14. Amperage setting too high may cause what defect? A. Excessive buildup B. Overlap C. Undercut D. Lack of penetration 15. Travel speed too fast is usually associated with which defects? A. Lack of fusion, surface cracks B. Undercut, under fill C. Porosity, under bead cracks D. None of the above 16. Many welding defects can be attributed to? A. Wrong/ incorrect amperage setting, polarity selection B. Wrong/ incorrect electrode angle, arc length C. Wrong/ incorrect travel speed, manipulation technique D. All of the above 17. The maximum acetylene line pressure should be? A. 5 B. 10 C Oxygen is a flammable gas A. Ture 19. After using the Oxyacetylene torch you should turn off the acetylene first and then the oxygen 20. When lighting the acetylene gas the oxygen should be turned off on the torch tip 21. The Acetylene tank is green 22. What factors should be taken into consideration when selection an electrodes for the job to be done? 23. Why should the electrode be clamped at its extreme end?
24. What two methods may be used in striking an arc? 25. If the arc length and current are correct, what is the characteristic noise that is heard? 26. A basic weld/ weldment A. Consists of two or mare base metals fused together B. Requires the use of both heat and pressure C. Requires the use of a filler metal 27. The weld positions (Flat, Horizontal, Overhead, and Vertical) A. Can be changed by rotation the face of the weld B. Can be changed by inclining the weld axis C. Can be fixed or manipulated during welding 28. The dimension line usually specifies A. Size and location B. Height, length, and width C. Angles, lengths and diameters 29. What are the four essentials for securing a sound weld? 30. What factors must be taken into consideration when selection an electrode? 31. What is meant by a single pass fillet weld? 32. What are some of the factors that must be considered when using or making a T-joint? 33. When welding a t- joint, using flat plates, why Should the arc favor the vertical plate? 34. When is a butt joint used in welding? 35. There are two sets of regulators and valves: Select the types of gasses that the regulators and valves are for. A. Argon and Acetylene B. Oxygen and Acetylene C. Acetylene and Propane D. Propane and Argon
