When used in anticorrosive primers, a deficiency of hardener is used to minimize the level of amine moieties in the cured film and the permeability of the film to ionic species. Solvents Coatings formulated with OUDRACure WB 8002 Curing Agent with no added solvent can have excellent performance. The performance of films cured at low temperatures can be enhanced with lbs per 100 gallons of DOWANOL PM, DOWANOL PnP, or DOWANOL PPh Glycol Ether. Page 1 of 8

2 Pigmentation Pigments can be incorporated into waterborne epoxy formulations in which both sides are aqueous in either the epoxy or the hardener side. OUDRACure WB 8002 Curing Agent has good pigment dispersing capability and is stable to high sheer. Its dispersing capability can be enhanced by using a conventional nonionic pigment dispersant such as Byk Chemie s Disperbyk 194. We have used Ti-Pure R-706 titanium dioxide in our work although undoubtedly other manufacturer s products and less durable grades can be used. In primer or high-build coatings formulated at higher PVC, choice of extenders is important to maintain good barrier properties. In anti-corrosive primer formulations, a mixture of extenders with differing inherent geometries has shown good results. Low aspect ratio extenders such as barium sulfate (Blanc Fixe N) or small particle-size glass spheres (Spheriglass 5000) should be combined with platy or needle-like inorganics such as wollastonite (Wollastocoat 10 ES), and small particle-size mica (325 mesh) or talc. Levels and ratios of the extender package should be optimized for final coating properties, but generally, formulating primers to a PVC no higher than 25-30% is recommended for best corrosion protection. Reactive Pigments/Flash Rust Inhibitor While coatings prepared with OUDRACure WB 8002 Curing Agent can yield good corrosion resistance, enhanced resistance can be obtained with addition of corrosion-inhibiting pigments. However, these reactive pigments can also destabilize formulations. Good results were obtained with Halox SW-111 strontium phosphosilicate at lbs/100gallons. Flash rust can occur when coating steel depending upon the ph of the coating and other factors. If flash rusting is noted, the addition of 8-10lbs/100gallons of a 15% solution of sodium nitrite is recommended. Epoxy Resins OUDRACure WB 8002 Curing Agent gives excellent coating properties such as gloss, corrosion resistance, adhesion, and chemical resistance when paired with Dow s OUDRASperse WB 6001 Epoxy Dispersion. OUDRACure WB 8002 Curing Agent offers a good compromise between pot life and cure time. The following two starting point formulations illustrate typical properties obtainable with OUDRACure WB 8002 Curing Agent. OUDRACure WB 8001 Curing Agent gives a noticeable increase in viscosity over the pot life and unapplied coating gels in its container similar to the behavior of 2-K SB epoxies. Volume solids, PVC, and ratio of OUDRACure WB 8001 Curing Agent to epoxy will influence the increase in coating viscosity over the pot life. The graph below summarizes the viscosity behavior for the two starting point formulations below. Performance Comparisons OUDRACure WB 8002 Curing Agent offers lower viscosity and therefore the ability to formulate higher solids coatings in comparison with OUDRACure WB 8001 Curing Agent. OUDRACure WB 8001 Curing Agent offers higher hardness, improved corrosion resistance and superior chemical resistance than OUDRACure WB 8002 Curing Agent. Page 2 of 8

Storage Store products in tightly closed original containers at temperatures recommended on the product label.
