3 SECTION IV. HEALTH HAZARDS PRIMARY ROUTE(S) OF ENTRY Skin and eye contact and inhalation are the most likely exposures. Ingestion is possible. TARGET ORGANS Skin, eyes, lungs, respiratory system HEALTH EFFECTS Eyes Skin Inhalation Ingestion Contact with solution can be intensely irritating. Noticeable irritation to eyes from ammonia vapor occurs at concentrations of 100 ppm. Solution can irritate skin. Exposure to strong solutions may result in severe burns and pain. Ammonia gas can be irritating to moist skin. Ammonia gas may cause varying degrees of irritation to mucous membranes and respiratory passages. Ingestion of solution may result in oral, esophageal, and stomach burns. EXPOSURE LIMITS No exposure limits have been set for aqua ammonia. Products of decomposition or combustion are toxic ammonia and nitrogen oxides. 4 SYMPTOMS OF OVEREXPOSURE Acute Chronic Notes to Physician Headache, salivation, burning of throat, perspiration, nausea, vomiting, or coughing None found Exposure to high concentrations of ammonia gas may result in pulmonary edema, often appearing 6 hours or more after exposure. Bronchopneumonia may develop. POTENTIAL HEALTH HAZARD DATA (IARC, NTP, OSHA) Ammonia gas is listed in OSHA Subpart Z as a sensory irritant. FIRST AID PROCEDURES Eyes Skin Inhalation Ingestion IMMEDIATELY flush thoroughly for 15 minutes with large amounts of clean water, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention. IMMEDIATELY wash thoroughly with large amounts of clean water. Remove contaminated clothing, wash or clean before wearing again. Remove to fresh air. Administer artificial respiration if patient is not breathing. Administer oxygen if patient has difficulty breathing. Seek medical help. Seek medical help immediately. If immediate help is not available, have conscious person drink large amounts of water. DO NOT MAKE PERSON VOMIT. Egg white, olive oil, or milk may be given to a conscious person. Keep the person warm. Watch for shock. Do not force an unconscious person to drink or vomit. Page 4 of 6

SAFE HANDLING AND USE Hygienic Practices It is advisable to wash promptly if skin becomes contaminated, before eating or smoking, before using toilet facilities, and at the end of the work shift before leaving worksite. Storage Store in cool, well-ventilated areas. Containers with plastic or rubber plug must not be filled to the brim. Maintenance Zinc, silver, copper, and copper-base alloys such as brass are rapidly corroded by moist ammonia vapors. SECTION VII. PERSONAL PROTECTION Ventilation Eyes Skin Respiratory Adequate ventilation to keep ammonia concentration below the OSHA standard of 35 ppm. Appropriate goggles should be used for transfer operations or where splashing may occur. Wear rubber gloves for transfer operations or where splashing may occur. If irritation occurs, impervious clothing and gloves should be worn. Where ammonia vapors exist in concentrations above the standard, respiratory protection should be provided. A full face mask with ammonia cartridge can be used in vapors up to 500 ppm. Above this limit and in unknown concentrations, use a full face self-contained breathing apparatus. SECTION VIII. Contamination of waterways could possibly cause fishkills. Prevent large quantities from contacting vegetation or waterways. Keep animals away from large spills.
