7 Indian Standard SPECIFICATIO~N FOR PUMPS HANDLING CHEMICALS AND CORROSIVE LIQUIDS IS : FOREWORD 0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted hy the Indian Standards Institution on 4 May 1970, after the draft finalized by the Pumps Sectional Committee had been approved by the Mechanical Engineering Division Council. 0.2 Chemicals and corrosive liquids are used iu different industries, such as chemicbl, textile, paper, fertilizers, petrochemicals, sugar, dye stuffs, steel, etc. L&n this standard various chemiralr; and Corrosive liqllids are specified and the requiremenls for centrifugal and rotodynamic pumps for use with such liquids are laid ROUX. 0.3 The technical requirements for cenlriffga1 and rotodynamic pumps covering wide range including definitions, umts, classes and types of pumps, effect of viscosity, specific gravity and other effects on the performance of pumps material of construction, salient design features, testing procedures, tolerances and guarantees are already included in IS : *. 0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied,with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 21960t. The number ofsignificant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard specifies the technical requirements for rotodynamic pumps ( such as centrifugal, axial flow, mrxed flow, turbo pumps, etc ) for handling chemicals and corrosive liquids. 2. 8 IS: CHARACTERISTICS OF CORROSIVE LIQDS 3.1 A corrosive liquid is one having any one of the characteristics specified below: a) PH value Less than 6 or more than 8 b) Turbidity ppm, Max c) Solid content IO percent, Max d) Solid size 3 mm, Max e) Temperature Minimum 0 C to 250 C maximum 3.2 Characteristics of chemicals and corrosive liauids met within different industries in India are given in Table NOMENCLATURE 4.1 Nomenclature of the parts commonly used in rotodynamic pumps chemicals and corrosive liquids shall be as given in IS : *. for 5. BALANCING 5.1 The major rotating parts, like impellers, the balancing drums, etc, shall be suitably balanced so as to prevent undue vibrations under normal operating conditions. NOTE In case where limiting of the undue vibrations 1s essential, this shall be separately agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier. 6. MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION 6.1 It is recognized that a number of materials of construction is available to meet the needs for pumps handling chemicals and corrosive liquids. Recommended materials of construction for the pumps handling. chemicals and corrosive liquids used in different industries are given in Tables 1 and 2. Wrought materials such as for shaft may be either of similar composition to the castings used or suitable shaft protection should be provided against corrosion. Most of the parts are primarily castings. 6.2 Gaskets, Seals and Packings Gaskets, seals and packings used for pumps handling chemicals and corrosive liquids shall conform to those specified in IS : 5120l 968*. *Technical requirements Car rotodynamic special purpose pumps. 4

16 ISr!w DESIGN Fl3ATuRJ.B 7.1 Flange Connections For pipe connections smaller than 50 mm, threading or joints by flanging may be provided, while flanges shall be provided for pipes 50 mm or larger. The flanged suction connection shall be designed for the same pressure as the discharge flanges at the operating temperatures consistent with hydrostatic test pressure. Unless required by the purchaser, the tapped openings shall not be furnished in high velocity areas of the pumps like suctiqn and discharge volutes; and in case of pumps handling acids or other hazardous liquids, no tapping in these areas shall be provided. 7.2 Nozzles and Miscellaneous Connections In case of fluids having crystallizing properties at a particular pump temperature like urea, steam jacketing around suction nozzle shall be provided to prevent the liquid from being crystallized during operations. 7.3 Wearing Ring In respect of wearing rings, it was decided to indicate that the casing shall be provided with wearing rings while in respect of the impellers, this would depend upon the design. 7.4 Running Clearance Sufficient running clearance between wearing rings and between other moving parts shall be such so as to prevent seizure under the operating conditions of temperature, suction conditions, etc. A shaft sleeve or a hard facing of the shaft surface may be provided. 7.5 Sealing Arrangements Stuffing boxes having conventional packings shall be of sufficient depth so as to prevent leakage within the.pump casing of the fluid being handled. This should also ensure replacement of the packing without dismantling any part other than the glands. The use of suitable packings without involving lubrications may also be employed and wherever possible, the use of mechanical seals is recommended. 7.6 Bearings Radial bearings of standard design ( ball, roller or sleeve type ) shall be prcvided. Suitable thrust bearings shall also be provided to take up axial thrust where required. The bearings shall have a rated life for continuous operation at the rated pump conditions of hours and shall, in no case, be less than hours at maximum axial and radial loads at rated speed. The bearing housings shall be effectivelysealed against the entrance of water or dust and shall have drain plug at the bottom of each housing. 8. DIRJXTION OF ROTATION 8.1 The direction of rotation of pumps is designated clockwise or counter clockwise as observed when looking at the pump shaft from the driving end 8.2 The direction of rotation shall be clearly marked either by incorporating an arrow in the casting or by a separate metal plate arrow securely fitted to the pump. 12

17 IS:!x ACCESSORIES 9.1 In addition to essential and optional accessories specified in IS : * provision shall be made for fitting the auxiliary pipings such as indicated below: 4 W 4 4 Stuffing box cooling connections shall be provided when temperature of the chemical liquid exceeds 95 C. Bearings shall be provided with cooling connections tain their temperature below 80 C. to main Vacuum equaliser connections should beprovided when pumping from suction vessels under vacuum. Sealing connections should be provided to lantern rings in stuffing boxes. 10. SUCTION LIMITATIONS 10.1 Suction limitations affecting the performance of the pumps handling chemicals and corrosive liquids are the same as those specified in IS : *. 11. FACTORS AFFECTING PUMP PERFORMANCE 11.1 Factors affecting the pump performance are the same as tnose specified in IS : *. 12. INFORMATION TO BE SUPPLIED BY THE PURCHASER AND THE SUPPLIER 12.1 The information to be suppied by the purchaser and the sunplier shall be as specified in IS : * 13. PUMP TESTS 13.1 Pump tests shall be the same as those specified in IS : 5120l 968*. 14. DETERMINATION OF PUMP PERFORMANCE 14.1 The determination of the pump performance shall be in accordance with the method specified in 14 of IS : *. *Technical requirements for rotodynamic special purpoac pumor. 13

18 IS : 5639 I NPSH TEST 15.1 The NPSH test may be performed at the duty point by any of the generally accepted methods. 16. GUARANTEES 16.1 Guarantee of Workmanship and Material The pump shall be guaranteed by the manufacturer against defects in material and workmanship, under normal use and service, for a period of at least one year Guarantee of Performance The supplier shall indicate the working range of the pump and the performance of the pump shall be guaranteed at a specified point of rating only and shall not be guaranteed to cover the performance of the pump under conditions varying therefrom or for a sustained performance for any period of time If the purchaser so desires, the manufacturer shall guarantee the nonover load of the prime mover for variations in the head in the working range. In the case of pumps where acceptance test cannot be conducted on the liquids for which the pump is designed, the manufacturer shall indicate the liquid performance of the pump based on the results of the tests conducted by him on the pump with water and interpolated as explained in IS : 512Or1968* Unless specified otherwise, pump performance figures shall be deemed to be applicable for 4.5 m suction lift at mean sea level and at a water temperature of 30 C Suction lift is to be reduced for higher altitudes at the rate of l5 m for every m above mean sea level. 17. TOLERANCES 17.1 In all commercial acceptance tests of pumps, a certain tolerance shall be allowed to the manufacturer on his guarantee to cover inaccuracies of the equations for discharge, errors of observations and unavoidable minor inaccuracies ofthe instruments employed A tolerance of f2.5 percent shall be permissible on the discharge. However, for small discharge up to 900 litres per dnute, a tolerance of +25 percent or +24 litres per minute, whichever is higher shall be allowed while the negative tolerance of 2.5 percent is maintained The percentage pump efficiency shall be not less than the specified value by more than 2.5. 19 IS : SPECIAL FEATURES 18.1 In case of more than one duty point, the performance range is to be indicated and the prime mover should be of sufficient power to take entire load in this range. Head restrictions shall be indicated in the name plates to avoid overloading ofthe prime mover For working in parallel, pumps should be with stable head capacity characteristics To prevent overheating of multistage pumps at full close pressure, an orifice, suitably designed, is recommended on the discharge side to maintain certain minimum flow. Balancing fluid leakage action should also be provided with balancing disc Provision shall be made for centre support for compensating thermal expansion while pumping liquids. 19.
