1 Product Bulletin Composites Resin laminating system with excellent mechanical properties, and a broad range of curing rates EPIKOTE MGS LR 235 Resin EPIKURE MGS LH Curing Agents For rotor blade manufacturers, boat-builders and others engaged in epoxy composite construction, the EPIKOTE LR 235 resin laminating system offers the high performance bonding you expect from Hexion Inc. with impressive processing versatility. This system combines excellent mechanical properties and great adhesion to a large number of substrates with the processing flexibility afforded by a selection of curing agents that produce a range of pot lives from a few minutes to over 12 hours. The potential for room temperature curing and a fine surface finish, even at lower temperatures and high humidity, further extend the versatility of this system. The mixed resin s viscosity was engineered to achieve fast and complete impregnation of reinforcements without spilling out when applied to vertical surfaces. The system contains no solvents or fillers. Processing Notes The stated mixing ratio must be observed carefully. Adding more or less curing agent will not result in a faster or slower cure, only incomplete cure with limited performance that cannot be corrected in any way. Resin and curing agent must be mixed completely. Mix until no clouding is visible. Special attention must be paid to the walls and bottom of the mixing container. All curing agents are colored blue to distinguish between resin and curing agents, and for visible confirmation of correct mixing. Although unlikely, deviations in color are possible (e.g. due to UV radiation after longer exposure to sunlight), but have no effect on the processing or final properties of the material. The range of pot lives is between approx. 1 min. and more than 12 hours. This variation enables the selection of an optimum system for each processing method. After pro-curing at room temperature, the manufactured components are workable and demoldable. The final properties, however, will only be reached after postcuring at temperatures of more than 4 C / 14 F. At room temperature, the fast curing agents LH are processable and demoldable after 6 12 hours, while the very slow curing agents LH 236 and 237 have curing periods of 2 4 days at room temperature. Due to the chemical characteristics of this system we do not expect any problems concerning compatibility (e. g. blistering, tearing or changes in color) when it is processed with gelcoats. However, comprehensive tests are indispensable. Because epoxy resins are supercooled liquids, crystallization is immanently possible. In the early stage, crystallization appears as cloudiness; later, the resin becomes a wax-like

3 solid. Before processing, crystallization must be reversed, which may be accomplished by slow heating of the product to approx. 4 6 C / F. This physical phenomenon is entirely reversible and has no effect on quality, once removed. In fact, a high level of purity will increase a material s tendency to crystallize. Although LR 235 resin is very unlikely to crystallize at low temperatures, storage conditions of 15 3 C / F and low humidity are recommended. After dispensing material, containers must be carefully resealed to avoid contamination or absorption of water. Separate from crystallization, all amine curing agents exhibit a chemical reaction, when exposed to air, known as blushing. This reaction is visible as white carbamide crystals, which can make the materials unusable. Optimum processing temperature lies in the range of 2 to 35 C / 68 to 95 F. Higher temperatures are possible, but will shorten pot life. A temperature increase of 1 C / 18 F will halve the pot life. Water (e.g. from high humidity or other sources) accelerates the resin/curing agent reaction. Different temperatures during processing are not known to have significant impact on the mechanical properties of the cured product. Do not mix large quantities particularly of highly reactive systems at elevated processing temperatures. As the heat dissipation in the mixing container is very slow, the contents will be rapidly heated by the exothermic resin-curing agent reaction. This process can result in temperatures of more than 2 C / 392 F in the mixing container, which may cause smokeintensive burning of the resin mass. 7 Typical Properties of Cured Resin System The following mechanical data are typical for the combination of laminating resin LR 235 with curing agent LH 237. Data may differ for other applications. Operational temperature is -6 C / -76 F up to +5 C / +122 F without heat treatment or -6 C / -76 F up to +8 C / +176 F after heat treatment. Data can differ in other applications. Safety, Storage and Handling Please refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the most current Safety and Handling information. Although the material is stabilized against crystallisation, when exposed to lower temperatures, we recommend storage at room temperature in a moisture-free environment, sealed in their original containers. Under these conditions they can be stored for a minimum of 24 months from the date of certification. Exposure to these materials should be minimized or avoided. Observe proper precautions, use appropriate engineering controls and proper personal protective clothing and equipment, and adhere to proper handling procedures. None of these materials should be used, stored, or transported until the handling precautions and recommendations as stated in the MSDS for these and all other products being used are understood by all persons who will work with them.
