1 Technical Data Sheet Niax* silicone L-3002 Description Niax silicone L-3002 lifts your molded foam operations to new levels of efficiency for applications requiring additional stabilization. A new silicone designed especially for MD1 and TDI/MDI HR molded foam applications, Niax silicone L-3002 takes Niax silicone L-3001 one step further to provide you with greater processing latitude. Niax silicone L-3002 accomplishes this through excellent foam stabilization while it simultaneously maintains desirable open-celled foam. This highly efficient silicone will help to stabilize higher-water MDI formulations. With low force-to-crush and minimal shrinkage, Niax silicone L-3002 is the preferred silicone for automotive and upholstered furniture applications. Niax silicone L-3002 supplies a high degree of stabilization and excellent cell opening, making it very suitable for TDI/MDI foam formulations where additional stabilization is Page 1 of 5

2 required. Please note that: Suggested use levels in this application range from 0.8 to 1.0 parts per hundred polyol (php). In all-mdi foams, Niax silicone L-3002 also is an effective stabilizer, particularly when higher water levels are used to produce low-density parts. Although use levels in this case will be between 0.4 and 1.0 php, the product concentration that yields the best results will depend on the specific formulation. Processing Recommendations In typical high-density MDI formulations that emphasize cell regulation and cell opening rather than foam stabilization, Niax silicone L-3001 is still the silicone of choice. However, Niax silicone L-3002 is the preferred silicone in higher water TDI/MDI formulations and in lower-density MDI formulations that require additional stabilization. In Table 1, formulations A and B are based on TDI/MDI mixtures. Formulation C is a higher-water MDI formulation. Formulations A and B Concentration of the silicones, Niax silicone L-3001 and Niax silicone L-3002, was varied from 0.6 to 2.0 php. The force-to-crush values obtained with Niax silicones L-3001 and Niax silicone L-3002 are plotted in Figures 1 and 2: The higher force-to-crush values with Niax silicone L-3002 indicate that L-3002 provides better foam stabilization. Additionally, the fine-cell structure produced makes Niax silicone L-3002 the ideal product when higher levels of water are used. Formulation C This is a higher water (4.25 php) MDI formulation: When Niax silicone L-3001 is used in formulation C, a partial collapse occurs because of the relative high water level in combination with an index of 90. Table 1 shows that Niax silicone L-3002 produces stable and open-celled foam, illustrating its superior effectiveness in stabilizing high water MDI formulations. The performance botton line: Niax silicone L-3002 significantly extends the range of foam quality achievable with MDI, particularly when water levels are increased in order to decrease the density.
