Flexographic and screen applications to difficult substrates The surface of coating (coating could mean paint, ink or composite) is exposed to "the outside world" and has to withstand some severe circumstances which may lead to a fast degradation of the system itself. In most cases, superior surface properties cannot be achieved without the addition of surface control additives that alter the surface properties of the coating. Depending on the kind of additive used, properties such as mar, slip and scratch resistance, abrasion resistance, anti-blocking,...etc can be altered. Very good dispersing properties can be achieved with all kinds of pigments When dispersing pigments, in particular organic pigments, one frequently encounters problems such as flocculation, insufficient color or transparency, poor rheological qualities or stability. 7 Symbol Metal content DRIERS Product name Description MORDRY Barium 12.5 Ba Barium carboxylates improve through-drying of a coating and have good pigment wetting characteristics. They also demonstrate lower water sensitivity than Calcium carboxylates. Barium carboxylates improve gloss and prevent adsorption of the primary driers at the surface of the pigments and extenders, thus increasing the stability of the coating during prolonged storage. In combination with Cobalt, Barium has a similar effect to that of Lead MORDRY Barium 10 WD Ba MORDRY Barium 10 WD is an auxiliary drier for all water-reducible oxidatively drying alkyd paints. Excellent results can be achieved when using MORDRY Barium 10 WD together with other waterdispersible metal driers such as MORDRY Cobalt 6 WD, MORDRY Zirconium 12 WD or MORDRY Manganese 6 WD MORDRY Calcium 4 Ca Calcium carboxylates, by themselves, have minimal effectiveness as driers but are very useful when used in combination with active driers such as Cobalt and Manganese. Calcium driers help to improve hardness and gloss as well as to reduce skin formation, silking and blooming. They are also useful as pigment wetting/dispersing agents and loss-of-dry inhibitors 12.5% 10% 4% MORDRY Calcium 5 Ca See MORDRY Calcium 4 5% MORDRY Calcium 10 Ca See MORDRY Calcium 4 10% MORDRY Calcium 4 WD Ca MORDRY Calcium 4 is a water-dispersible Calcium salt of saturated branched mixture of acids. Excellent results can be achieved when using MORDRY Calcium 4 together with other water-dispersible metal driers MORDRY Cerium 10 Ce Cerium carboxylates promote the polymerization and through-drying processes. They are particularly recommended for baking enamels and white and clear overprint varnishes, as they produce less discoloration than other active metals. Cerium driers are far less active than cobalt and manganese. At low temperatures (below 0º C) or at very high atmospheric humidity, Cerium driers do though show higher efficacy than the other primary driers MORDRY Coblat 6 Co Cobalt carboxylates are the most effective oxidative catalysts at ambient temperatures. Cobalt is a primary drier for coating systems. Cobalt soaps function as oxidation catalyst and are used at low levels. The use of excessive amounts of cobalt in coating systems can cause rapid skinning, wrinkling of the film as it dries, and reduced water resistance of the cured film MORDRY Coblat 10 Co See MORDRY Cobalt 6 10% MORDRY Coblat 12 Co See MORDRY Cobalt 6 12% MORDRY Cobalt 6 WD Co MORDRY Cobalt 6 WD is a water-dispersible Cobalt salt of saturated branched mixture of acids. Excellent results can be achieved when used together with other water-dispersible metal driers 4% 10% 6% 6% MORDRY Cobalt 6 P Co The curing of unsaturated polyester requires organic peroxide which starts polymerization by radical formation. The radical formation step from organic peroxide is too slow. This step is generally catalyzed by a cobalt accelerator. Ideal for polyester resin systems ca. 6% MORDRY Cobalt 6 T Co MORDRY Cobalt 6 T is supplied in Toluene 6% MORDRY Copper 8 Cu Copper acts as an anti-fouling agent in marine paints. It also finds an application as a wood preservative. It is particularly effective in controlling the cure and peak exotherm of the unsaturated polyester systems and can add shelf stability to a promoted resin, produce longer work times, promote resin synthesis and lower the peak exotherm of the formulation 8% MORDRY Lead 24 Pb Lead carboxylates promote thorough polymerization of the film, catalyzing the uniform drying ofthe surface and inside of it. In addition, they improves film's flexibility and its resistance to water and salt at the same time. Lead carboxylates are always combined with Cobalt and/or Manganese together with small amounts of Calcium drier 24% MORDRY Lead 32 Pb See MORDRY Lead 24 32% MORDRY Lead 36 Pb See MORDRY Lead 24 36% MORDRY Lithium 2 Li Lithium carboxylate is an auxiliary paint drier which is used in conjunction with primary driers and promotes through drying. MORDRY Lithium 2 is compatible with water-based and solvent-based vehicles and used in waterborne alkyds and high-solid systems. It exhibits also catalytic activity in synthesis of resins and plastic materials 2% 7

8 Symbol Metal content DRIERS Product name MORDRY Manganese 10 Description Mn Manganese carboxylates improve the surface drying of a paint film and also possess some through-drying properties. They are frequently used as polymerization accelerators in baking finishes and low-temperature drying systems.they are used most often in combination with Lead and/or Cobalt driers and an auxiliary drier. In baking systems, Manganese soaps are most often used as a sole metal drier 10% MORDRY Potassium 10 K Potassium carboxylates work synergistically with Cobalt in unsaturated polyester thermosetting resins 10% MORDRY Strontium 10 Sr Strontium driers are ideal auxiliaries for systems containing no heavy metals. MORDRY Strontium 10 is a secondary drier that enhances through-drying and thus ensures better film properties.it can be used in all alkyd-based systems and, especially, in systems with high solids content. It is also suitable for applications in extremes of temperature and humidity 10% MORDRY Zinc 16 Zn Zinc carboxylates exhibit anti-oxidant properties and are used as additives to retard the thermal breakdown of lubricating oils and greases. Either by themselves or in conjunction with Calcium or Barium, they are very efficient at stabilizing PVC against in-process heat degradation. The main function of Zinc carboxylates is to improve film hardness and prevent wrinkling of thick films MORDRY Zirconium 12 Zr Zirconium carboxylates improve the through-dry of auto-oxidative drying systems. They are used in combination with Cobalt and Calcium carboxylates and are preferentially used as replacements for Lead. Zirconium will yield improved gloss and color when compared to Lead. Zirconium carboxylates are also utilized as polymerization catalysts 16% 12% MORDRY Zirconium 18 Zr See MORDRY Zirconium 12 18% MORDRY Zirconium 24 Zr See MORDRY Zirconium 12 24% MORDRY Zirconium 12 WD Zr Water-dispersible Zirconium salt. MORDRY Zirconium 12 WD will yield improved gloss and color and is usually added in combination with Cobalt or Managanese (especially the water-dispersible versions MORDRY Cobalt 6 WD and MORDRY Manganese 6 WD). This product can be used in applications where calcium is used as a wetting agent in the pigment dispersion stage Mix MORDRY 320 is a stabilized, ready-to-use blend of Cobalt, Zirconium and Calcium suitable for use in a wide range of decorative paint systems. The pre-stabilized mixed drier can eliminate problems associated with coatings such as gelling or instability resulting in degradation of drying performance 15% 1% (Co) MORDRY 345 MORDRY 371 MORDRY 380 MORDRY 390 Mix MORDRY 345 is a stabilized, ready-to-use blend of Cobalt, Lithium and Calcium. It can eliminate problems associated with coatings such as gelling or instability resulting in degradation of drying performance Mix MORDRY 371 is a stabilized, ready-to-use blend of Cobalt, Zirconium and Calcium suitable for use in a wide range of decorative paint systems Mix MORDRY 380 is a stabilized, ready-to-use blend of Cobalt, Zirconium and Barium suitable for use in a wide range of decorative paint systems Mix MORDRY 390 is a stabilized, ready-to-use blend of Cobalt, Lead and Barium suitable for use in a wide range of decorative paint systems 1.2% (Co) 0.8% (Co) 1.2% (Co) 1% (Co) The chemical hardening of unsaturated liquid binders by means of the reaction with atmospheric oxygen is described as drying. Metal-organic compounds (metal soaps or complex) are used in relatively small concentrations to control drying processes. Such additives are described as driers. From the chemical standpoint, driers are molecular (homophase) catalysts for free radical oxidative polymerisation, which is a chain process developing in the presence of the atmosphere oxygen. 8
