Silver cadmium-free alloys represent the latest stage of security against the carcinogenic effects of cadmium fumes. These alloys may still contain cadmium as an impurity, but at a very low controlled limit of 0,025 % maximum. Therefore the use of these alloys is strongly recommended for certain purposes, even obligatory, for example for the equipment for preparing food. These alloys combine the lowest brazing temperatures with short melting ranges. They are very free flowing and produce neat joints with small fillets. They have excellent mechanical properties and are suitable for sea water applications being resistant to dezincification. Cadmium free alloys are often used as substitutes for cadmium containing alloys. Their narrow melting ranges make them ideal for applications where liquation may be a problem. Page 1

These alloys are recommended when joining copper to copper without flux. They can be used to join brass and bronze too. They are not suitable for joining materials containing nickel or iron. The alloys are widely used in plumbing applications and since they do not contain zinc, they cannot suffer from dezincification. Page 2

The nickel improves wetting on carbides and produces a less free flowing alloy. The group Ag49MnNi, Ag40Ni and Ag27Mn are cadmium free alloys containing nickel and manganese. The manganese content improves the wetting on carbides containing titanium and tantalum which are difficult to wet under normal brazing conditions. The use is limited only by relatively high temperature of melting. Page 3

5 BRAZING FLUXES WATER SOLUBLE FLUXES Flux Activity DIN 8511 Form Flux residue removal Packaging (kg) Tenacity No F-SH 1 Powder Mode B 0,5 / 5,0 It is used on brass where red staining due to oxidation of zinc is a problem. It is active at 450 C and spreads rapidly giving good cover early in the heating cycle. Dipping Grade F-SH 1 Paste Mode A 1,0 / 25,0 Dipping Grade is a thin, smooth paste becomes highly active early in the brazing circle. It exhibits minimum bubbling during preheat and is ideal for induction or for very short heating cycles. Silver - Flo F-SH 1 Paste Mode A 1,0 / 25,0 Silver-flo flux paste is a general purpose flux and is recommended for use with all silver brazing alloys which have liquidus below 725 C. Aluminium Bronze Grade F-SH 1 Paste Mode A 1,0 This flux is used on aluminium bronze and other copper based alloys containing from 2 to 10% aluminium where other fluxes are unable to dissolve aluminium oxide. Powder F-SH 1 Powder Mode A Easy-flo flux powder is ideal for hot rodding or application as a water based paste. Mattiflux F-SH 1 Paste Mode A 0,5 / 1,0 / 50,0 0,5 / 1,0 / 25,0 Smooth paste combining low melt viscosity with good resistance to overheating. It is particularly recommended for the brazing of mild steel. Tenacity No F-SH 1 Paste Mode A 0,5 / 50,0 This flux is a boron modified flux for use on stainless steel, tungsten carbide and the refractory metals. Paste F-SH 1 Paste Mode A 0,5 / 1,0 / 25,0 Easy-flo flux paste is a general purpose flux with better life at temperature and greater overheat resistance, being active to 825 C. Page 4

6 BRAZING FLUXES WATER NON-SOLUBLE FLUXES Flux Activity DIN 8511 Form Flux residue removal Packaging (kg) Tenacity No. 4A F-SH 1/2 Powder Mode C 0,5 / 5,0 This general purpose flux is intended for use with brazing alloys which have a liquidus between 700 and 850 C. It is recommended for use with Sil-fos solder and other phosphorus solder for brazing copper alloys. It can be used instead of Easy-flo, in cases where local overheating or prolonged heating cycles are possible. Tenacity No F-SH 1/2 Powder Mode C 0,5 / 5,0 Recommended when brazing stainless steel at temperatures above 700 C and also for brazing large assemblies in steel or copper wherever prolonged heating is necessary. Tenacity No F-SH 2 Powder /Paste Mode D 0,4 / 5,0 Universal flux for high temperature, recommended for use with J & M Bronze alloys. Tenacity No F-SH 3 Powder Mode D 0,5 / 5,0 High-temperature flux without fluoride for use with B-bronze and G-bronze alloys. Mode A: Residues are generally soluble in hot water. Immersion for up to 30 minutes followed by brushing in a stream of water is recommended. Mode B: Residues are virtually insoluble in water. Immersion in a warm 10% sodium hydroxide solution followed by brushing in a stream of water is recommended. Mode C: Residues are virtually insoluble in water. Immersion in a warm 10% sodium hydroxide solution followed by brushing in a stream of water is recommended. Mode D: Residues are insoluble in water. Grit blasting or other mechanical means of removal are necessary. Page 5
