C OBJECT This method is used to measure the relative adhesion of paint to steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, plastic, or other substrates. D RISK ASSESSMENT A valid risk assessment must be in place before this test is conducted. E REVIEW This document is to be reviewed at least every three years from the date of the last review or update. The geometry of the knife blade used to make the cut lines must be comparable to a Stanley Tools Limited blade number See the website for local agent. 2 Metal Grid A metal grid with 3 mm spacings Grid available from Pearson Panke Limited 3 Adhesion Tape Tesa 4122 heavy duty PVC tape size 66 m x 25 mm. 3.1 Source: RW Greef, Tame Park Vanguard, Wilnecote, Tamworth, Staffordshire, B77 5DY, UK. H CONDITIONING AND TEST CONDITIONS 1 All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 C ± 2 C and 50 % ± 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 hours prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. 2 Unless otherwise specified in the material standard, air dry and low bake e.g. 80 C paint finishes shall be aged for a minimum of 7 days and high bake e.g.140 C paint finishes for a minimum of 24 hours prior to test. I PROCEDURE 1 When the paint adhesion test is required after another test procedure, the adhesion test must be performed within 30 minutes of the previous test or as otherwise specified by the applicable Engineering Material Specification. 2 Measure and record total paint film thickness prior to adhesion test in accordance with ISO Method A - Cross Hatch Test 3.1 Cut lines through the paint to the base material as shown in Appendix A, or as specified in the Materials Engineering Standard, using the metal grid as a guide to ensure that the scribed lines are 3 mm apart, and where applicable, at right angles and diagonal in one direction. 4 Method B - Parallel Scratch Test 4.1 Draw the knife blade across the test panel at an angle of 90 to the specimen for a length of

3 Page: 3 of 6 50 mm or as long as possible with sufficient pressure to cut through the paint down to the base material. The knife blade should be drawn towards the operator. Draw a second parallel line in the same way 2 mm apart from the first. 5 Remove all loose debris (brush off) from the scribe line prior to tape test. Apply the Tesa 4122 tape by pressing firmly and removing within 90 seconds ± 30 seconds of application by pulling it off rapidly (not jerked) back upon itself at as close to an angle of 180 to the panel as possible. J DATA GENERATED AND REPORTING 1 Observe and report any occurrences of flaking, chipping or general poor adhesion after removal of the tape. Refer to Appendix 2 for classification system. Plastic and glass-fibre substrates may also fracture. In the absence of loss of paint adhesion such chipping shall be ignored. 2 On completion of the test, a Test Report must be created to include all relevant data such as location, date, time, temperature and other conditions that may affect the test at the time of processing. 3 The test report must be submitted to all interested parties and archived in accordance with current corporate records retention policy.
