2 OMEGA-GLYDE Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) SHEET, ROD AND TUBE OMEGA-GLYDE Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) originally given the trade name of Teflon. OMEGAGLYDE PTFE Sheet, Rod and Tube is resistant to practically every chemical and has a surface as slippery as ice on ice to which no substance will adhere. The fluorocarbon plastics include Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE). Polyvinylidene (PVDF), polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) and a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene (FEP) form a relatively new group of plastics remarkable for their extreme chemical resistance, excellent dielectric properties and wide working temperature range. 3 PTFE Chemically Modified PTFE modified with hexafluoropropylene (HFP) and perfluoropropylvinylether (PPVE) results in a reduced crystalline phase and an increased amorphous phase. It has enhanced mechanical performance, with a very high recovery and ultra-low deformation under load. Chemically modified PTFE has reduced permeability, no polymerisation and a longer in-service life. It can outperform PTFE, filled PTFE, PFA and FEP. Mechanical and Architectural Industry: Seals; Piston rings; Bushings; Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) FEP (Fluorinated ethylene propylene) is extruded and injection moulded. It has the chemical resistance, mechanical and electrical properties of PTFE but a more narrow temperature range maximum temperature is 205ºC. FEP has better clarity than PTFE and is used in tubing and bag applications. A plastic converter can apply knit fiberglass to one side of an FEP sheet. Fabricator can weld glass backed sheets together over cylindrical moulds and vessel closure moulds (flat or dished or conical heads). They then overwrap this liner with fiberglass reinforced thermoset resin to make chemical resistant tanks, vessels and columns for the corrosive chemical industry. 4 Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) Perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) is melt processable. Its properties are similar to those of PTFE and include resistance to practically all chemicals, a useful temperature range, resistance to weathering, low coefficient of friction and excellent electrical insulation characteristics. It is, however, more expensive than PTFE and FEP resins. High purity grades are also available. It is not attacked by inorganic acids, bases, halogens, metal salt solutions, organic acids or anhydrides. Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, ethers, amines, esters, chlorinated compounds and other polymer solvents have little effect. 5 Polyvinyl Fluoride (PVF) PVF (polyvinyl fluoride) is a member of the fluorocarbon family. It has outstanding resistance to weathering and good resistance to abrasion and steaming. It is used as a surfacing film for industrial, architectural and decorative building materials.
