Crack Length(1x1µm) H13 1 H13 (51HRC) (45HRC) Thermal Cycles Thermal Cycles Heat Treatment is delivered in a soft annealed condition for easier machining. When machining is completed, can be hardened with a heat treatment procedure including preheating, austenitization, quenching and double tempering. Heat treatment should be done under vacuum or under gas protection to avoid surface oxidation and decarburization. Surface and core temperature (Ts/Tc) should be controlled by thermocouples. Preheating Heating rate should be limited to 4 F/h (22 C/h), measured in the core of cavity. First preheating has to be done at Ts 1 F (62 C) and hold until Ts-Tc < 2 F (11 C) Second preheating has to be done at Ts 3 F (83 C) and hold until Ts-Tc < F ( C) Austenitization After second preheating, austenitization should be rapidly increased up to 1885 F (13 C) and hold 3 mn after Ts-Tc < F ( C). In any case, soaking time shall never exceed 9 mn max after Ts reaches 1885 F (13 C). Quenching Quenching shall be performed in oil or pressurized gas. Pressurized gas should be preferred when quenching complex shapes. Fast cooling has to be applied from austenitization temperature down to 3 F ( C) Cooling rate, measured at the surface of the cavity, must be at least 55 F/min (3 C/min) between austenitization temperature and 99 F (53 C) To limit stresses, a special attention shall be paid at the temperature difference between surface and core. Especially in the temperature range 75/84 F (4/45 C), the temperature difference between surface and core shall not exceed 18 F (1 C). Below 3 F ( C), cavity should be air cooled to 12/18 F (5-8 C) and should then be immediately loaded in a furnace to perform a first tempering. 4/ Issue Page / F: / / F:

After tempering pieces should be air cooled to room temperature.
