Wet activated carbon can remove oxygen from the atmosphere, which is hazardous to workers operating in closed spaces. Suitable permit to work system should be enforced for vessels containing activated carbon, and adequate monitoring of the oxygen content of the atmosphere in the vessel should be taken at all times.
