4 ADVANTAGES OF TENACTIV IN PROTECTIVE GLOVES COMFORT The most important difference between other fibers and TenActiv fibre is the level of comfort it can give a glove. Today, wearing comfort is as important an attribute as technical performance in protective gloves. If gloves are not comfortable to wear, employees won t wear them all the time, especially if they need to do other things (work or non-work related) where a high level of dexterity is required. The risk therefore of employees returning to their work stations and not wearing adequate glove protection is high, and this can lead to potential injuries (which can lead to indirect costs). TenActiv fibre disperses body heat quickly to the outside of the glove, unlike traditional materials like leather or cotton that insulate. Thanks to this, hands stay cool all day long! Tests have demonstrated that when wearing a glove with TenActiv, the actual hand temperature stays very close to normal body temperature, while gloves with other fibres (like cotton, leather or aramids) caused an increase in hand temperature of 3-4 C degrees above body temperature (see figure 2). This will cause sweating and an uncomfortable feeling. HIGH ABRASION RESISTANCE Thanks to the smoothness and high crystallinity of the TenActiv fibre, the abrasion resistance is extreamly high and cannot be matched by any other fibre. Tests have demonstrated that gloves made with TenActiv have up to 20 times better abrasion resistance than gloves made, for example, with Aramid (spun) yarnds, which will have a significant effect on the durability and longevity of the glove. 4

5 Protective gloves are often exposed to sharp objects that can abrade the glove. The more a glove is abraded the less protection it offers. Naturally, the higher the abrasion resistance a glove offers, the longer the wearer is protected in a consistent way. Gloves with TenActiv offer a consistent cut performance during the lifetime of the glove, where other materials deteriorate during wear. LAUNDERABILITY AND RE-USE Thanks to its chemical structure, TenActiv is inert to most of the aggressive agents used in industrial laundering, as well as environmental influences such as UV. This enables you to wash TenActiv under the most harsh conditions, such as dry-cleaning and bleaching without affecting the specific properties of TenActiv. Standard chemicals, typically used in industrial laundering such as detergents, ammonium, sodium hydroxides, hydrochloric acid, etc., are not known to affect the performances of the TenActiv fibre. This enables you to wash and re-use the gloves many times. In figure 1, the effect of industrial washing on cut and abrasion resistance is shown Figure 1: Effect of washing on Cut and Abrasion resistance of TenActiv. 6 ADVANTAGES OF KEVLAR Kevlar fibre is incredibly strong, tough, and resistant to heat, flame and cuts. This unique combination of high-performance properties makes Kevlar fibre the solution for many demanding applications: Ballistic vests & hard armour Ropes & cables Cut and heat-resistant gloves & sleeves Tires / Mechanical rubber goods Firefighter turnout gear Composites In addition to its impressive list of inherent properties, Kevlar is available in a wide range of fibre forms, providing protectiveapparel manufacturers with plenty of design flexibility. Some of these fibre forms include spun yarns, textured filaments, and engineered blends that incorporate other fibres and colours. Consequently, end users can rely on the fact that they will be able to benefit from the protection offered by Kevlar regardless of their industrial application. As an example, the range of Kevlar gloves goes from 15-gauge, lightweight cut-resistant gloves, all the way to heavyweight, heat-resistant mitts. Gloves made with 100% Kevlar fibre provide good thermal-insulation properties for hot and cold working enviroments. Another important performance criteria to consider when selecting the appropriate PPE is the care, cleaning and disposal of the product. The ability to launder and recondition gloves made of Kevlar has been an important element of the overall value proposition and widespread industrial acceptance. Laundering to clean the most challenging greases and oils does not affect the cut resistance of Kevlar. Kevlar brand fibres are resistant to many chemicals and solvents. However, strong acids, bases, and certain oxidizers like chlorine bleach, cause rapid degradation of the fibre. Industrial launderers operate in the mid ph ranges (4-8), never lower or higher. In addition, the elimination of chlorine bleach in the cleaning of industrial apparel does not hinder the ability to clean it. Keep in mind that bleach would have to be avoided if the PPE contained spandex fibres anyway, so if it is absolutely necessary to bleach PPE, then oxygen bleaches can be used as an alternative without issue. Kevlar is a registered trademark of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. 6

ENGINEERED (COMPOSITE) YARNS Engineered composite yarns are yarns made with two or more components (i.e., Kevlar and steel). These yarns Engineered composite yarns are yarns made with two or more components (i.e., Kevlar and steel). 8 GLOVE LAUNDERING Washing gloves very often results in significant savings, especially if you are using high quality leather, TenActiv or Kevlar gloves. Superior will gladly assist you with any questions and provide you with information on laundering. Contact our customer service department for tips, especially the do s and don ts of glove laundering. We will also provide you with information you need to locate the best launderers in your area. Professional glove launderers will know how to wash any type of glove. Here is a rough guideline that may be helpful. KEVLAR GLOVES OTHER MATERIALS Kevlar is inherently cut-resistant, meaning that cut resistance is unchanged over the lifetime of the glove. Despite repeated laundering, Kevlar can be washed over and over, with no effect on shrinkage, weight loss or changes in tensile strength. Kevlar is resistant to many chemicals and solvents, with the exception of strong acids, bases and oxidizers Kevlar must never be bleached. However, oxygen bleach can be used in place of chlorine bleach. Detergent Wash 1. Use approx. 5 lbs commercial laundry soap or detergent per 100 lbs Kevlar 2. Use hot water: 75 C 3. Wash for 20 minutes 4. Rinse with hot water 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 if necessary 6. Rinse in cold water 7. Tumble dry for 35 minutes at 70 C Dry Cleaning 1. Pre wash using perchloroethylene for 5 minutes 2. Drain 3. Wash for 20 minutes using perchloroethylene and 12 oz of anionic surfactant/100 lbs of Kevlar 4. Tumble dry at 60 C or less. 9 EN STANDARDS EXPLAINED The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive (89/686/EEC) is written to ensure all PPE meets common standards of quality and performance and is categorised to enable safety professionals to match the PPE to the level of risk or hazard identified. Protective gloves, which are classified as PPE, must be CE marked and comply with relevent EN standards (described below). The PPE regulation specifies three classes of gloves for different levels of user risk: minimal, intermediate, and mortal or irreversible. SIMPLE DESIGN - Minimal risk Gloves which may be used in low risk situations such as gardening gloves or cleaning gloves. Manufacturers are permitted to test and certify gloves themselves - gloves within this category are CE marked as follows: INTERMEDIATE DESIGN - Intermediate risk Gloves which may be used to protect against intermediate risks such as mechanical protection gloves providing cut, puncture and abrasion resistance, must be subjected to independent testing and certified by a notified body. Only approved bodies may issue a CE mark, without which the gloves may not be sold. The name and address of the Notified Body must appear on the instrictions for use that accompany the gloves. Gloves of intermediate design are CE marked as follows: COMPLEX DESIGN - Irreversible or mortal risk Gloves which are designed to protect against the highest level of risk (e.g., chemicals) must be tested and certified by a Notified Body. The quality assurance system used by the manufacturer to guarantee homogeneity of production must be independently checked. The body carrying out this evaluation will be identified by a number which must appear alongside the CE mark. Gloves of complex design are CE marked as follows: EN420: General requirements for protective gloves Defines the general requirements for most types of protective gloves which includes: - Glove construction - Innocuousness - Water vapour transmission and absorption - Ergonomy - Product marking and packaging information - Electrostatic properties - Dexterity - Sizing Sizing of gloves according to hand length and circumference: glove size HAND CIRCUMFERENCE (mm) HAND LENGTH (mm) minimum LENGTH OF glove (mm)

EN407: Protection from thermal hazards The heat and flame pictogram is shown with six numbers, representing performance levels against specific thermal hazard tests. EC FOOD DIRECTIVE Superior Glove products are approved for contact with all foodstuffs in compliance with the parent directive 1935/2004/EC. They also comply with the specific requirements laid down in European Commission Directive 2002/72/EC which governs the substances that may be used in the manufacture of food contact materials (including gloves for food handling) and specify that under normal foreseeable conditions of use, they do not transfer their constituents to food in quantities which could: - endanger human health; or - bring about an unacceptable change in the composition of the food; or - bring about a deterioration in the organoleptic characteristics (i.e., texture, taste, aroma) To ensure food contact materials comply with these regulations a series of test standards are applied (EN 1186) to determine migration levels from contact materials into the food using a variety of food simulants. Compliance with the allowable limits enables food handling gloves to be marked with the following food safe pictogram: 10

48 EN 388 STANDARD EN 388 is the European standard used to evaluate mechanical risks for hand protection, but more than that, to be legally sold in Europe, a glove has to be EN 388 certified. Gloves with an EN 388 rating must be third-party tested and can be rated for abrasion, cut, tear and puncture resistance. - Cut resistance is rated 1-5 and A-F only - The other factors are rated from 1-4 Up until now, cut resistance was measured using the Coup Test, which uses a rotating blade under a fixed load. The blade moves back and forth across the surface of the test glove. The 2016 update to the EN 388 standard will now use the Coup Test and the ISO standard which uses a TDM-100 machine for a more accurate measure of cut resistance. CUT TEST UPDATES A common complaint about the Coup Test was that the blade would dull during the test, especially over highly-engineered yarns that feature steel or glass strands. The Coup Test has been revised to limit the number of passes the blade can make over the test fabric to 60. Whether cut through has occurred or not. The rest of test will remain the same. If the Coup Test blade makes 60 passes over the fabric, it is then mandatory to test the glove under the ISO cut resistance method to assess the glove s performance. This is the A-F rating. WHAT IS THE ISO TEST METHOD (TDM-100 TEST)? For those of you who are familiar with your cut resistance testing methods, this test is similar to the ANSI/ISEA cut test standard. If you aren t familiar, here s the rundown: The goal of this test is to measure the load applied to a blade that is required to achieve a cut-through in a known distance on a test fabric The glove sample is placed on a conductive strip and loaded onto the TDM A straight blade is loaded into the machine. 3. Weight is added to serve as force. 4. The blade moves across the fabric. 5. The blade is replaced with a new one to ensure accuracy. 6. The sample is cut five times, each with three different loads 7. The distance traveled to cause cut through at various forces is recorded. 8. The data is used to determine the load in Newtons required to cut through the sample.

50 NEWTON TO GRAM CONVERSION What s a Newton you ask? One Newton is equal to grams about the same weight as a bar of soap. There is no correlation between the ISO and EN 388 standards, so converting the Newtons from the ISO testing will not provide accurate grams to cut on the EN 388 rating. NEW MARKINGS To account for the new additions of the TDM-100 cut test and impact test to the EN 388 standard, the glove marking will now feature two additional components as seen in the New Marking diagram to the right. Rating Abrasion 1-4 Cut (Coup Test) 1-5 Tear 1-4 Puncture NEW TEST METHODS ABRASION TEST New abrasive test paper will be used. Some abrasion new test conditions. CUT TEST If the TDM-100 test is used, a letter between A and F may appear on the marking to represent cut resistance. A letter was chosen to avoid confusion with the Coup Test results. IMPACT TES T This test is new to the EN 388:2016 standard and is optional. It should Rating Abrasion 1-4 Cut (Coup Test) 1-5 Tear 1-4 Puncture 1-4 Cut (TDM-100 Test) A-F Impact Protection P CX ties. The marking will include a P to indicate the glove has passed the impact test. 50
