1 708-18(-e)99 OKLAHOMA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR PLANT MIX BITUMINOUS BASES AND SURFACES These Specil Provisions revise, mend nd where in conflict, supersede pplicble sections of the 1999 Stndrd Specifictions for Highwy Construction, English nd Metric, s pplicble. Units of mesurement re provided in the subsections in both Englis h nd Metric equivlents. The units pplicble for this project will be those specified in the project plns MINERAL AGGREGATE. (Add SMA column in Tble 1 s follows:) TABLE 1 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF AGGREGATES Test SMA L.A Abrsion, % wer, mximum 30 Snd Equivlent(b), % minimum 50 Mechniclly Frctured Fces b c j, % minimum 100/95 Aggregte Durbility Index, minimum 40 Insoluble Residue d e, % minimum 40 Micro-Devl, % wer, mximum 25 Flt nd Elongted Pieces c f, % mximum 10 Nturl Snd nd Grvel b, % mximum 0 Cly Blls nd Frible Prticles g, % mximum 0 Soft Prticles, % mximum 5 Sticks or Roots, % mximum 0 Applies to ech source except s noted. b Applies to the combined ggregte except s noted. c Applies to the ggregte retined on the No.4 (4.75mm) sieve. d Applies to the combined corse ggregte. e Applies to the corse ggregte used in the surfce course. Does not pply to shoulders nd temporry detours. f Flt nd elongted prticles hve rtio of length to thickness greter thn 5:1.

2 g h i (b) 04 Applies to the combined ggregte. Provided the mximum for the combined ggregte is not exceeded, mximum 1.5 percent will be llowed for ny one source. In the requirement formt xx/yy, xx denotes the percentge of corse ggregte requiring one frctured fce nd yy denotes the percentge of corse ggregte requiring 2 frctured fces. Regrdless of the ctul design life of the rodwy, the design ESALs re bsed on 20 yers. () Corse Aggregte. (Add the following:) The corse ggregte for SMA shll be tht prt of the ggregte retined on the No.8 (2.36mm) sieve nd shll consist of clen, tough, durble prticles. (b) Fine Aggregte. (Add the following:) Fine ggregte for SMA shll be tht prt of the ggregte pssing the No. 8 (2.36mm) sieve nd shll consist of hrd, durble crushed stone, stone dust, crushed grvel, or mine cht or ny combintion of these mterils COMPOSITION OF MIXTURES. (Chnge s follows:) () As phlt Mix Design nd Initil Job-Mix Formul. The SMA mix design nd initil job-mix formul re the responsibility of the Contrctor nd shll be submitted to the Mterils Division for review. The review of the proposed mix design will be to determine tht the mix meets the design criteri. The Contrctor shll furnish one mix design for ech specific SMA mixture listed on the plns or in the Contrct. The mix design shll be prepred in n pproved lbortory of the Contrctor s choice. A request for lbortory pprovl my be mde either by Contrctor or Lbortory. Approvl will be ccording to the Mterils Division Policy for Asphlt Mix Design Lbortories. Mix designs will not be pproved for use until the Contrctor submits n cceptnce letter stting cceptnce sttus, project number nd mix design designtion, or signs nd returns the mix design to the Mterils Engineer. The initil job-mix formul shll meet the requirements of tbles 5E nd 6E. The contrctor shll prepre tril mixture. The tril mixture, prepred t the initil job-mix formul proportions, must meet the requirements for the following properties: grdtion, AC content, ir voids, nd VMA. If the tril mixture fils to meet ny of the requirements, the Contrctor my propose chnges to the job-mix formul. If the chnges result in mixture meeting these Specifictions, the job-mix formul will be djusted ccordingly. The job-mix formul shll estblish single percentge of ggregte pssing ech required sieve, single percentge of sphlt to be contined in the mixture, nd single temperture of the mixture t point of dischrge from the plnt. The job-mix formul with the llowble tolernces shown in Tble 7 shll estblish the Specifiction limits for ech mixture. These limits my be outside the brod rnge in Tble 5E except for the bsolute mximum sieve size. (3/4" Sieve for SMA.)
