1 e Powe High Pefomance and Highly Reliable Solution Powe Notes fo TELP Seies The powe module has lage emal expansion. When e module is unning and cycling ove lage tempeatue diffeence, e pope mounting to ensue even pessue applied on module is vey impotant. Please ead ough below befoe installation. Hot Side and Cold Side Identification: The modules will geneate electicity only if ee is a tempeatue diffeence coss e modules. So, you need to attach one side of e modules to a heat souce and e oe side to a cool souce like heat sink to dissipate e heat coming fom heat souce ough e modules. Ou module is unique and diffeent to oes. The modules have cold and hot sides. You should attach e cold side to heat sink o heat exchange, and hot side to heat souce. Then e positive output is in ed wie, if evesed, en in black colo wie. The tempeatue on e hot side of e module can wok continuously at 500 C (932 F) o below and intemittently up to 600 C (1112 F). But e tempeatue at cold side of e module can wok only at 250 C (482 F) o below. So, if e mounting is evesed, and e cold side of module is attached to heat souce above 250 C (482 F), e module will degade quickly o fail immediately. So, please ensue hot side attached to heat souce is vey impotant. Below is e diagam to show which side of module is hot o cold one, whee e wie diection faces you. ( Usually, you also can see a making Hot Side on hot side cea plate) The positive output will be on ed colo wie if e installation is coect. The evesed installation will lead to negative output fom ed colo wie. emona emona Tempeatue Limits Tempeatue ange of e TEG Hot side: -60 C ± 500 C, Maximum 600 C emona Tempeatue ange of e TEG Cold side: -60 C ± 250 C, Maximum 270 C Tel: Fax: :sales@emona.com.cn Web Site:

2 e Powe Themal Inteface: Micoscopic Look at Sufaces High Pefomance and Highly Reliable Solution Even when you have two flat and smoo sufaces, ey ae fa fom tuly flat o smoo. The diagam below shows what s eally going on at a oscopic scale. As you can see, e two sufaces may look flat and smoo, but in eality, when examined unde magnification, ey Flat and Smoo Sufaces? consist of hills, peaks, and valleys. When ese two sufaces ae bought into contact wi one anoe, only e peaks make contact. It has been calculated at e aveage amount of contact between any two smoo sufaces is in eality only 5%. The oe 95% ae voids! Contact wiout any TIM Heat Souce Contact wiout any TIM The above image shows how e emaining valleys ceate voids ough which heat enegy can baely pass ough, in effect ceating an insulated aea not e ideal emal inteface. 3 e Powe Suface Finish and Pepaation Heat Souce Contact Using a TIM High Pefomance and Highly Reliable Solution As a minimum, any suface intended to be pat of a emal inteface should be flat to ± inches ove e entie inteface suface and smoo to a suface finish of 32 o inches o bette. The inteface suface must be ooughly cleaned.once all machining and polishing is completed. Do not touch e suface wi bae hands (skin oils) o allow any contact wi oe mateials. It is bette to complete is final cleaning stage just befoe assembly so as to minimize any dust o contamination. Themal Inteface Mateials (TIM) A id paty inteface mateial is needed since it is all but impossible to achieve ideal flat and smoo sufaces. The pupose of e TIM is to fill e valleys and gaps wi a compessible mateial at has a much highe emal conductivity (ability to tansfe heat) an e ai gaps it eplaces. This essentially makes e entie inteface tansfe heat instead of just whee e peaks wee contacting. The following image shows how e situation has been damatically impoved. emona emona Applying e TIM Contact Using a TIM Hee we pefe to use aluminum foil and high emal conductivity gaphite sheet fo heat tansfe. The aluminum foil which sticks on e hot side of e module can opeate fom -40 C to 600 C. Ou TEG module is also stuck wi e high emal conductivity gaphite sheet on cold side to povide low contact emal esistance. So, you do not need to apply emal gease o oe emal inteface mateials when you install e module. The aluminum foil can wok well in extemely high tempeatue. emona Tel: Fax: :sales@emona.com.cn Web Site:

4 e Powe TEG Mounting: High Pefomance and Highly Reliable Solution TEGs should be mounted using e compession meod. That is, e TEG is compessed between a hot plate and a heat sink (o wate block) at will be coole. The compession o clamping should be ceated wi stainless steel machine scews on eie side of e TEG. See Exploded View and Section View images below. emona (Cold Side) Do not exceed 200 Clamping Foces: The following table lists e clamping foces equied fo optimum powe geneation and emal contact. Pat Numbe Size in mm Clamping Foce Scew Diamete/Numbe of Scews / Toque Pe Scew TELP mm 80 mm 480Kgs/1050 Pounds+/-10% 5mm/2/0.335 kg m Scew Position: emona Locate bolt holes in you assembly such at ey ae at opposite sides of e cente of e TEG between 1.0 mm to 12.7 mm (0.04 to 0.5 inches) fom e sides of e TEG. [See fist image below] The bolt holes should be in e same plane line as e fins to minimize any heat sink bowing (bending) at might occu. emona Tel: Fax: :sales@emona.com.cn Web Site:

5 e Powe Clamping Pocedue: High Pefomance and Highly Reliable Solution Befoe tightening e scews, apply a light load/foce in line wi e cente of e TEG by using a clamp o weights. Make sue e clamp o weights apply e foce evenly and at e cente. Bolt caefully, by applying toque (tightening e scews) in small incements, and altenating between scews. It is of e utmost impotance at e scews ae tightened evenly in small incements back and fo. If one scew is ove tightened, en e tightening of e second scew may cush e TEG. [See 2nd image above] Use a toque limiting scewdive fo best accuacy. Note: If a toque scewdive is not available, a easonably accuate pull sping scale attached to e end of an L-shaped hex emona (Allen) wench (is is a good eason to use socket head cap scews) can be used to detemine when e scew toque is eached. Make sue e sping scale is pulled pependicula (90 ) to e Allen (Hex) Wench at all times. emona emona Tel: Fax: :sales@emona.com.cn Web Site:
