Reaction Lab Reactions LAB You will go around from station to station and follow the instructions for each station on the hand out here. We will be in groups of 3 or 4 (NO MORE THAN 4 please!!!!!!!) You will fill in the data in the chart provided. PURPOSE: Instructions You will have about 8 minutes at each station to get the data; Then we will move onto the next station. At each station you must leave the space clean and tidy, putting waste chemicals in the waste container and rinsing with the water. Also leaving lids back on containers and the area wiped up. 1: Place 5 drops of Silver nitrate in the spot plate and add 5 drops of Sodium Chloride onto it. Note down your observation. Aqueous silver nitrate reacts with aqueous sodium chloride to produce solid silver chloride and aqueous sodium nitrate 2 Place 20ml of Bromthymol Blue solution in the ziploc bag. Add 1 tsp of the calcium chloride to it. Note down your observations on the chart. (NOTE TEMP change) Calcium Chloride reacts with the water to produce calcium oxide and hydrochloric acid (HCl) 3 Place a small amount of zinc in the small test tube and add just enough hydrochloric acid to cover the zinc. Note down your observations (how could we test what type of gas is produced?) Zinc metal reacts with aqueous hydrochloric acid to produce zinc(ii) chloride and hydrogen gas

Reaction Lab 4 Measure 20mL of copper (II) chloride solution into the small beaker. Take a small piece of Aluminum foil and crumple it slightly. Drop it into the solution. Label the beaker and place it on the side till end of class. Note observations in chart Aluminum displaces the Copper(II) chloride to produce Copper metal and Aluminum chloride 5: Place 5 drops of barium chloride into the small spot plate. Then add 5 drops of Sodium sulphate to the same spot. Rinse waste with wash bottle into the waste beaker. Note Observations in Chart Aqueous barium chloride reacts with aqueous sodium sulphate to make barium sulphate and aqueous sodium chloride 6: Take copper wire and sand it. Roll around a pencil to make a coil. Place in small beaker. Pour in enough Silver(I) nitrate to cover the copper. Put your name on the beaker and set aside till the end of class. Note Observations in Chart Solid copper reacts with Silver (I) nitrate to form Silver metal and copper(ii)nitrate. 7: Place 20 ml of the Hydrochloric acid solution (with universal indicator in it) and place in Ziploc bag. Carefully add 1 spoonful of Sodium Hyrdogen carbonate. Seal the Ziploc. Note observations in Chart WORD EQUATION Hydrochloric acid reacts with Sodium hydrogen carbonate to produce sodium chloride, water and carbon dioxide. 8: In fumehood, take small piece of magnesium and hold it in the flame of the Bunsen burner, till it lights. Let it fall into the evaporating dish. Record observations in chart WORD EQUATION Magnesium reacts in Oxygen gas to produce magnesium oxide

Reaction Lab Purpose: CHEMICAL REACTION STATION LAB List 3 Safety issues in this lab: Fill in this chart as you go around the room to each station

Reaction Lab

Reaction Lab 8 Questions: 1. List three methods that you saw that showed you a chemical reaction had occurred? 2. List three ways the gases produced could be tested? 3. Complete all equations and Balance. (Include states --- solid, liquid, gas and aqueous) Conclusion: (explain in 2-3 sentences what you learned while doing this lab)
