Mercury Vapour Monitoring with the MVI By Peter Childs

What is Mercury? Mercury is a metal that exists in liquid form at room temperature Mercury is a toxic substance Metallic mercury will evaporate at room temperature. Because it divides into tiny globules, spillages present an enormous surface area from which evaporation takes place

Bacharach MV2- to MVI UK DHSS demanded a more sensitive instrument with 0.1 micron/m3 resolution. MV2 not able to offer sensitivity better than 10 micron/m3 Mercury spillage into baby incubators from damaged thermometers had been identified! Every incubator must be tested. Over 5000 across the UK

MVI Operation Switch On and allow the instrument to run until you see a stable reading This should happen after 3-4 minutes when operating in the range Allow 10 minutes before operating in the range

MVI Range of Measurement The MVI has two manually switched ranges 0-200ug/m3 with 0.1ug resolution ug/m3 with 1ug resolution

MVI Operation As soon as the reading is stable you can zero the instrument If you are in clean fresh air, rotate the zero adjust control knob

MVI Operation Carbon Zero Filter If you suspect you are in an area contaminated with mercury, connect the charcoal filter to the inlet of the MVI. Then rotate the zero adjust control knob.

MVI Applications Monitor environments where mercury or mercury compounds are produced, processed or stored or present Wherever mercury vapour may pose a health hazard to personnel and livestock

Mercury in the Environment Landfills Recycling facilities Fluorescent tubes Ore Extraction Gold Chemical Production Chlor Alkali

Mercury in the Environment Cement Production Gauge manufacture and repair Mercury switches Housing & Urban renewal Thermostats etc Coal & Cement stacks for CEM Universities, Schools, Hospitals & Laboratories Rechargeable Batteries Refineries

MVI Interferences The MVI operates on the principle of UV light absorption. There are substances that are known to interfere including various hydrocarbons, water vapour, sulphur compounds and smoke particles

MVI Interferences Approximate readings when exposed to a 100ppm concentration; Benzene Toluene Acetone Ethyl Alcohol Ethyl Acetate 20 ug/m3 3.5 ug/m3 3.0 ug/m3 6.0 ug/m3 3.0 ug/m3
