1 TRITONTM SURFACTANTS TRITON Nonionic Surfactant DF-12 Low-Foam Surfactant Product Description TRITON DF-12 is a 100-percent active, low-foam, nonionic surfactant. It is an excellent detergent and general defoamer for widely ranging foam challenges including food soils. It is suggested for use in rinse-aids and mechanical dishwashing detergents, lowtemperature spray metal cleaning formulations, and other detergent products where low foam at low operating temperature is required, such as automatic floor-scrubbing products and in-place dairy pipeline cleaners. Special Features Excellent detergency and wetting Low-foaming, even at low in-use temperatures Stable in acid solutions Stable with caustic materials Suitable for bottle washing, rinse additives, power metal cleaners, power floor cleaners, and textile wetting Typical Physical Properties Actives Content, wt % 100 Appearance Clear, Straw-colored Liquid Viscosity, at 25 C, cp 60 Specific Gravity at 25 /25 C Density at 25 C, lb/gal 8.6 Flash Point, Cleveland Open Cup, F 430 Cloud Point, 1% aqueous solution, C 17 Pour Point F 65 ph, 5% aqueous solution 6 UC Union Carbide. 2 Performance Properties Solubility and Compatibility TRITON DF-12 is soluble in water and in water and in many common solvents, including alcohols, aromatics, and chlorinated solvents. It is insoluble in highly aliphatic solvents, glycols, and glycerine. TRITON DF-12 is stable in alkaline solutions and in typical acid detergent formulations. When blended on strong alkalies like caustic, it may discolor slightly, but shows no significant performance loss. It should not be compounded with chlorinerelease agents, since it loses low-foam and defoaming properties in such preparations. Biodegradability TRITON DF-12 exhibits excellent biodegradability. Three methods have been used to demonstrate the biodegradability of TRITON DF-12: Semicontinuous Activated Sludge Unit* Cobalt thiocyanate analysis shows 93 percent biodegradation of TRITON DF-12. Continuous Activated Sludge Unit* Utilizing cobalt thiocyanate analysis, TRITON DF-12 shows 90 percent biodegradation in a six-hour retention time. River Water Die-Away Using surface tension measurements and cobalt thiocyanate analysis, TRITON DF-12 is 90 percent degraded in 10 to 12 days. *Laboratory test unit Surface Activity TRITON DF-12 has a minimum surface tension of 30 dynes/cm at 25 C. The data in Table 1 were obtained using the DuNouy Tensiometer. 3 Foaming Properties The foaming properties of TRITON DF-12 are significantly less temperaturedependent than those of many other controlled-foam nonionic surfactants. Foaming characteristics were evaluated using the Hamilton Beach Test at a surfactant concentration of 0.01 weight percent. Five-second values are reported in Table 2. Food Soil Defoaming TRITON DF-12 is an effective defoamer for proteinaceous food soils. Soap Defoaming The presence of soap from soil components or from the saponification of oil or fat in the soil can produce foam in power metal cleaning operations. TRITON DF-12 is effective in defoaming soap in metal cleaning applications. 4 Wetting TRITON DF-12 combines low-foaming characteristics with good wetting. The data shown in Table 5 were obtained by the Draves Test Procedure which is outlined in the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists Yearbook as AATCC Method Table 5 Draves Wetting Test (1) Percent Concentration for 25-sec Wetting Time Surfactant 25 C 50 C TRITON DF TRITON CF Alkylphenol Ethoxylate (1) 5-g gray cotton skein with 3-g hook at 25 C. Applications Machine Dishwashing Detergents TRITON DF-12 was evaluated in a spotting test, using clean glasses run through multiple cycles in a Kitchen Aid dishwasher with an oleo-dry milk soil. Water (150 ppm hardness) containing 0.25 percent of the following formulation was used at 55 to 60 C (130 to 140 F): Ingredients TRITON DF-12 2 Sodium Tripolyphosphate 52 Sodium Metasilicate, anhydrous 31 Sodium Carbonate (Soda Ash) 15 Wt Percent With 20 g (0.23 percent) of soil (4:1 mixture of oleo and Starlac ) and five cycles, no soil deposition and relatively few spots and/or streaks were observed. Rinse Aids In tests using laboratory apparatus designed to simulate commercial dishwashing conditions, TRITON DF-12 was comparable to TRITON CF-10 in its ability to increase drying rate and reduce spotting. Rinse-Aid Formulations Formulations (1) Wt Percent Viscosity at 25 C (77 F), cp TRITON DF TRITON DF Water 15 TRITON DF Isopropyl Alcohol 23 Water 27 (1) All three formulations remain clear up to at least 60 C (140 F): Alcohol or other solubilizers must be used to ensure the clarity and homogeneity of rinseaid products containing 75 percent or less of this surfactant because of its low cloud point. 4 4 of 7

5 Spray Metal Cleaning The detergency characteristics of TRITON DF-12 in this application were comparable to those of TRITON CF-10 in laboratory tests. This test consists of soiling mild steel panels with SAE-40 motor oil and two commercial drawing compounds and cleaning them by passing them through a wash containing 2-percent of detergent formulation sprayed from a V-jet nozzle at 10 psi and 60 C (140 F). The use of 0.5 to 3.0 percent TRITON DF-12 in a standard base resulted in rapid and more complete soil removal regardless of the soil used, with no unusual foam development. The alkaline base consisted of the following: Ingredients Sodium Hydroxide 15 Sodium Metasilicate, anhydrous 35 Sodium Carbonate (Soda Ash) 30 Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate 20 Wt Percent Of particular interest in metal cleaning operations is the low cloud point of TRITON DF-12 which gives low-foam characteristics and detergent effectiveness at low temperature (35 C or less), well below the usual range for this class of surfactant (60 C or above). This advantage makes possible substantial savings in heating and energy costs. Others Based on its low-foam and detergency characteristics, TRITON DF-12 may be used in bottle-washing compounds, in-place pipeline cleaners, and detergent products for cleaning food-processing equipment. The low-foam qualities of TRITON DF-12 at low temperatures and its good waxstripping performance in laboratory tests suggest its use in specialty applications, such as detergents for automatic floor-scrubbing equipment. TRITON DF-12 may also be formulated in acid cleaners. 5 of 7 5
