2 SS/ZDT/GP_6. Introduction The ZDT Analyzer/Alarm Unit is a versatile microprocressorbased oxygen analyzer designed primarily to meet the requirements of the medium-sized boiler and furnace market, utilizing high-quality zirconia oxygen probes, for energy management. The high temperature version of the ZDT Unit is designed to operate with the Model ZGP oxygen probe. The probe sensor is temperature compensated from 600 to 400 C ( to 55 F). In the event of probe thermocouple failure the temperature of the process can be preset in the ZDT Unit. The standard analyzer has high/low alarm relays and a single linear or logarithmic isolated retransmission. Display features include %O, cell temperature, cell mv, alarm set points, calibration sequence diagnostics and output settings. The analyzer provides oxygen readout with computation based on the probe mv signal. The mv output signal is Nernstian in form and follows the equation: E(mV) P 0 P = T (log0 ) C (mv) Construction and Operation The ZDT Zirconia Analyzer is housed in a sheet steel enclosure, environmentally protected to NEMA 4X (IP66) and meets the requirements of Generic Emission Standard (EN5008-) for residential, commercial and light industry and the Generic Immunity Standard (EN5008-) for industrial environments. The analyzer is based on the proven 4600 Series transmitter having a two-line display with four tactile membrane switches. The measured value display-line is a 5-digit, 7-segment green back-lit LCD while the information display-line is a 6-character, single-line, dot-matrix, green back-lit LCD. The information display can be user-programmed for display in English, French, German or Spanish language. The switch enables movement from the 'Operating Page' to the oxygen calibration sequence. Use of the appropriate security code allows further access to the pages for 'Set Up Outputs' and 'Electrical Calibration'. The switch is used to select the various programming pages while the and switches change programmable values. In the Oxygen Calibration Page a User Code is required to proceed beyond the diagnostic information to the calibration sections. Where: T = Absolute temperature ( K) P 0 = Partial pressure reference O (air) P = Partial pressure sample O C = Cell constant = Faraday s Gas Constant Reference air for the ZGP probecan be supplied by an optional integral pump within the ZDT, or by external regulated instrument air. Flow rate of the integral pump is approximately l/min. (0.64 galls/min.).

6 SS/ZDT/GP_6. ZGP High Temperature Zirconia Oxygen Probe Introduction The ZGP Oxygen Probe has a high temperature oxygen concentration cell using zirconium oxide as a solid electrolyte. It is a second generation product developed as a result of extensive experience in zirconia oxygen sensing systems. The Probe is designed to measure excess O concentration in furnace atmospheres and is installed directly in the furnace. It provides a true wet measurement of the atmospheric conditions in situ at the plant operating temperature. This permits continuous and accurate measurement over a wide range of temperatures without the frequent maintenance and cleaning associated with external sampling systems. It eliminates the 'equilibrium shift' common to other systems in which gas samples have to be cooled before measurements can be taken and has an extremely rapid response to changes in atmosphere, enabling fast, corrective action to be taken (particularly important in automatic control situations). The probe can be mounted vertically or horizontally, although for high temperature operation the vertical position is preferred. The outer protection sheath may be supplied in aluminous porcelain, recrystallized alumina or Incoloy 800. A thermocouple is mounted within the probe to enable temperature monitoring or automatic temperature compensation. A gas calibration port is provided to allow the probe output to be checked using test gas mixtures without removing the probe from the process. Reference-air is required for accurate operation. Principle of Operation The probe comprises a ceramic detector cell housed in a protective sheath. A thermocouple is fitted within the probe to enable the process temperature to be monitored and to provide automatic temperature compensation. A connector head (protected to IP56) facilitates connection of the cell output, thermocouple and reference air connections. The sheath material may be: Ceramic (aluminous porcelain) for oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures up to 50 C (8 F) where limited amounts of corrosive chemicals are present Recrystallized alumina (special order) for reducing/oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures up to 400 C (55 F) and where corrosive chemicals are present Metal (Incoloy 800) for reducing/oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures up to 850 C (56 F) when horizontally mounted and up to 000 C (83 F) when vertically mounted A calibration gas inlet port is provided to enable the probe to be checked using test gas mixtures without removing it from the process. Reference air [500 to 000ml/min ( to ft 3 /hr)] is required for accurate operation and can be supplied from an ABB mainspowered pump unit or a flow-regulator unit. Specification ZGP Probe Temperature range 600 to 50 C ( to 8 F) continuous 400 C (55 F) max. Measuring range Refer to 'Operating Limits' diagram (opposite). The lower limit of operation, determined by the onset of electronic conduction in the solid electrolyte is dependent on temperature. The following limits are given as a guide for % electronic conduction but in practice it may be possible to measure at even lower oxygen potential levels without introducing significant errors.
